Meet Firefly Theatre Group

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Firefly Theatre Group. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Firefly Theatre Group with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
As cliche as it may sound, the work ethic of The Firefly Theatre Group truly grew out of necessity and hardship. Our theatre company was founded in 2019 with an incredible opening season; including several world premieres of original work and a Fringe Festival showing. Of course, no one was prepared for the challenges that 2020 brought; but we were specifically challenged with trying to produce live theatre in a town (Los Angeles) that often struggles to support that endeavor. We were forced to adapt not only in our personal lives, (as we all were), but artistically as well. How do you generate art when the world is shut down? You get creative, hunker down, and produce what you can, where you are, with who you have. The necessity of wearing many hats and figuring it out as we went ingrained in our entire company not only the value of hard work, but the value and joy of creating community through art and theatre.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Founded in 2019, Firefly Theatre Group was created as a home for actors filled with ambition, experimentation, and fun. It is a safe place where artists can get together and play – creating work that’s relevant to the world today. We are currently based in North Hollywood and are on our fifth season of producing live theatre in Los Angeles. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Producing theatre requires so many individuals with varying skill sets coming together to create something truly special. But perhaps the most concrete “skill” to foster when producing is the ability to stay flexible. In a perfect world with an unlimited budget, there would never be any complications that arise and every artistic venture would be free from hurdles. But this idea of what “perfect” art might look is not only unrealistic, it doesn’t actually produce very interesting experiences. The challenges, the adversity, the hurdles; these are in fact all ingredients that have proven time and again that they are necessary in making interesting, poignant art. Staying flexible, being open to the unknown, and remaining willing to admit when you simply don’t know can all feel daunting in the moment, but are some of the most valuable skills when the final curtain rises on a new project.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Unequivocally, YES! If you or someone you know is looking for a theatrical home, then have we got a theatre company for you! Firefly Theatre Group is committed to collaborative story-telling in a safe space that elevates voices of diversity in all forms. All are welcome and valued and needed in this space and we remain committed to that aim as our Company continues to grow!
