We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kate Lombardo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kate below.
Hi Kate, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Rather than “overcoming” imposter syndrome, I believe a more helpful approach for me has been to lean into it and learn from what role that intense feeling of self-doubt is trying to tell me. This looks like me finding this careful balance between confidence and humility. Learning a lot from the wisdom of Adam Grant, I never want to be in a place where I think I know everything. Life is a journey and despite having a lot of success as an entrepreneur, I still have so much to learn. I have so much to learn from others who have gone before me and I also have a lot to learn from myself and what I’m capable of.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own a counseling and wellness practice that offers services including counseling, psychiatric medication management, and trauma-informed yoga classes. We have transitioned and rebranded from a counseling private practice into more of a wellness center that provides multiple services for our clients. I believe that as complex beings, our needs are many. Mindful movement is a huge part of my own life and therefore care deeply about making this accessible for as many people as possible. Our brand logo being a fire with a heart inside symbolizes the transformative potential that fire can have. In Eastern beliefs and philosophies, fires is seen as more than this destructive force that we often consider it in the West. It is seen as a role of nature that is necessary for a landscape to grow and develop new life. I believe we are all capable of that, no matter what the trauma, past, or what someone’s story looks like. Transformation and evolution is available for all who choose. This idea is what keeps me excited and full of passion in the work that I do.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first would be this idea I came up with that getting an education, whatever that looks like, is just like laying the foundation of a house. Once the foundation is laid, we have our whole lives to build the rest of the home through experience, our own growth, and additional training in our field.
I also think about this idea that every person is deserving of excellent care, just like every person should be treated with love, care, and respect. This is the lens through which I strive to see my work. If this ever gets misaligned, I am probably burning out and need to lean more into my own self-care and needs.
Finally, much of my career revolves around communication. It is so important that we continue to operate from a place of empathy and connection so we can provide the very best service in our jobs, no matter what career we’re talking about. I think about the value of getting back to clients as quickly as possible so they can get care when they need it.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the last year, my practice has grown from 4 employees to 9 and we have transitioned and rebranded from a counseling private practice to a wellness center. Change has been constant and it is has been a challenge to stay grounded and emotionally regulated at all times with all that goes into these transitions. My biggest area of growth has been in trusting the process while living in mystery and uncertainty. I have learned through my own life experience that when we try to force things, it doesn’t work out and/or, it just isn’t sustainable. I have learned to trust my intuition and decision-making and that while things sometimes happen exponentially faster or slower than I imagined, having a sense of trust in that what will work out is how it should.
