Meet Kate Mueller

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Mueller. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kate, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I recently had a lighthearted conversation with another friend who works in a very male dominated field, and I joked–just imagine what experts we are becoming because whenever we’re working on something someone comes to tell us how we could be doing it better!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I want it to be said of my time here on earth, that I helped things grow, and that I always sought connection. I found a practice that feeds my soul in environmental installation art, specifically the shoreline installations that I have done in this past year. Not only have I learned a lot regarding public art and the permit process, but it’s also given me clarity on what my art is for—just because of how much time the permission process takes. If it’s just for me, I can go to the beach anytime. But if it’s intended to be what I think it is, then it’s about connecting humanity through the ages, by referencing Stonehenge, by referencing constellations. For as long as human beings have been stacking rocks on top of each other, we have been building them in reference to solstices and equinoxes, and creating stories about how our lives move in relation to the stars. Knowing that this throughline in humanity is what the environmental installations are about makes the goal one of seeking connection.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Being trainable, being honest, and sincerely caring about the task at hand—these qualities are important. The last one is perhaps the most significant barometer for your own investment. If you find that you are working on something that you have sincerely stopped caring about, then it might be time to reassess.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Understanding that there are ‘different kinds of smart,’ and every person you meet on a project or a job has something they can teach you.
