Meet Katelin Burton

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katelin Burton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katelin below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Katelin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

Both of my parents were self employed, therefore there were financial ups and downs. I watched my father work long hours and do whatever it took to close a deal. I remember thinking that if I worked hard, I too could have the same success. My parents set the best example and always encouraged me to aim high

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I started my career in my Birthplace, Sydney Australia, working for Vogue Australia magazine. It was an incredible first job, I learned so much about Advertising, Photoshoots, high end Designers as well as the publishing business.
I then moved to the US with my American fiance, we moved to Dallas for his work. I landed a job at Kim Dawson Agency, a well known Modelling Agency working as a model Agent. It was there that I met so many amazing photographers, models, Makeup Artists, Creative Directors and basically everyone in the Fashion world in Dallas.
A few years later, I segued into Wardrobe styling and went out on my own, represented by Kim Dawson Agency. 30 years later I am now the Wardrobe Director for 24/Seven Films, a Dallas Based Production Company. When we land a shoot whether it be a still or video, I collaborate with the clients, using their vision to create fashion looks for the shoot, also bringing in whatever props we need. It is such an exciting job as we get to travel to amazing places, work with different clients and wonderful talent. No shoot is ever the same, it keeps things new and exciting. Ultimately, it is the people that I work with that have made my career so utterly rewarding. The team at 24/Seven films are like family to me, we all have each other’s back and will jump in to help each other out on or off set.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The 3 things that have been most important in my journey are:
Be reliable- always arrive early, be prepared, look presentable, never sit down, there’s always something to be done, and put your phone away, unless it’s crucial to your job.

Knowledge of all things Fashion – from textile properties, how to pin and drape fabrics, current trends, the history of fashion as well as a broad knowledge of past and present designers has been invaluable.

Good business sense – being self employed, it is crucial to keep good books, know how to send an invoice, understand how to file your taxes, organize receipts, set up and contribute to your 401k plan and save money for a time when business was may be slow. If you need help, hire an accountant.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed due to a large upcoming shoot I really try to compartmentalize my thoughts. I do this with a to do list starting with the most important items, down to the least important. It gives me the ability to focus on each item individually instead of having several jumbled thoughts in my head. The feeling I get after systematically checking off each item is that of pure relief.
