Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katherine Sprung. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Katherine with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Definitely from my parents! They’re super hardworking and self motivated people, and I think I just inherited that and really saw it in action growing up. Both of my parents are self-starters. They grew up in environments where they really were in charge of pushing themselves and creating their own paths. They’ve had to work hard, and build opportunities for themselves. I’ve grown up witnessing this first hand, knowing that there are rarely “easy buttons”, and that if you want to do something, you typically have to put the work in. They wanted to be able to provide the support for me that they might not have exactly had, building encouragement, cheering me on, and supporting me in my ideas and projects that I’ve shown interest in persuing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an award-winning pastry chef and the founder of Squish Marshmallows, a bespoke marshmallow company in NYC. I’ve had the honor of winning Food Network’s Chopped Sweets, competing on Beat Bobby Flay, and being featured on the Hallmark Channel, Thrillist, Forbes, Eater, Cosmopolitan, Insider, Money, and various local news outlets. I also have a podcast/web series called Sprung On Food, where the overall topic of conversation is food, with each season geared toward a theme. In addition, I’m a commercial voice over artist and content creator. I’ve never been very good at doing a singular thing! I’m a New Yorker who loves walking everywhere, while listening to too many true crime podcasts. I also voluneer at an animal shelter, because I’m passionate about reducing and ideally ending animal homelessness.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
That would probably be, being scrappy, being creative, and not having an ego. If there was ever a project I wanted to start, I would have to figure it out to make it happen. That could be asking lots of people who are specialized in that area for advise, researching, and making and doing a lot of the things myself to expedite things and save money. With that comes the need for being creative so you can make something appear somewhat professional even if you made it on a shoestring budget! Not having an ego has also allowed me to take on jobs myself, doing a lot of the grunt work that others might be too ashamed to do or think they’re above.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I think collaboration is awesome. I do content creation, along with my podcast, and definitely open to collaborating on content pieces for YouTube or social media, swapping as guests on each others podcasts, and partnering with brands for content or podcast sponsorship (of course all of these will have to be a good fit). Definitely connect with me on Instagram @iamsprung, and send me a DM! Reach out on LinkedIn or just email me directly! I’ve shamelessly pitched myself to loads of things before, and cold DMd or emailed people I’ve wanted to connect or work with, so at least always take the consideration of reading each message! If there’s a fit, there’s a new connection and potential collaboration that might not have happened otherwise!
