Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Katherine Wentworth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Katherine , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience is deeply rooted in the experiences of witnessing my entrepreneurial parents build businesses and overcome personal challenges. My mother, a polio survivor from the Mayan Riviera of Mexico, whose family founded a successful shrimping empire, and my father, of English and German descent, who grew up on the farmlands of Kansas, showed me that being a boss means first doing all the jobs you ask other people to do. Their relentless work ethic and unwavering tenacity were profoundly inspiring to me. As a young child, I witnessed the importance of never accepting ‘no’ for an answer. Both in business and life, my parents ingrained the lesson that, even when there was no established road or path to follow, it meant that you only needed to create one.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was born in Houston, Texas, and spent my adult years living between New York City, Los Angeles, Ibiza, and Berlin. Throughout my career, I’ve been recognized as a ‘Trailblazer,’ a theme that continues to define my life today. I began my career in NYC working in fashion marketing and event production. Through working in such a competitive market, I realized the power of standing out from the crowd and learned how to successfully market anything. This insight became pivotal in my successful transition into a career in the music and entertainment industry. In marketing, the essence lies in narrating a unique and relatable story to the individual listener. By sharing a product, service, or person’s hero’s journey, one can effectively communicate how it has the potential to enhance and improve the listener’s life, compelling them to engage with the product, service, or person. Life is sometimes very challenging, and I find so much joy in illuminating aspects that make our existence on planet Earth more enjoyable.
In 2017, while living in Berlin, I discovered meditation. During one session, I realized that to manifest anything, you needed to design it first. Thus, my company, Design2Manifest, was born. I have since assisted companies and individuals in getting clear on their vision and then connecting with their customers and fans to grow their businesses.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Throughout my marketing career, one of the most valuable skills has been cultivating an ‘outside-of-the-box’ mentality. Being innovative and willing to take chances is what moves the needle in almost every business. Another crucial aspect is acquiring ‘real-life experience’ by trying out new practices and discerning what works. Lastly, authenticity plays a vital role in working with clients and connecting to customers and fans. When both the people you are working with understand that you, too, have faced the same challenges and know how to overcome them, it creates a level of trust that is indispensable.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The most helpful skill in overcoming challenges has been to get out of my ego and know that I don’t “know everything”. Staying humble and open to learning every day is my biggest asset. I must stay teachable and open to learning. I continue to work with coaches and mentors and get feedback from people and business professionals I respect so that I can grow. In a nut shell, Mahatma Gandhi said it best. “One must become as humble as the dust before he can discover truth.”
