We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kathleen Kennedy . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kathleen below.
Kathleen , thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Burnout is such a real thing. The pressure to be constantly creating is a real thing. If we are not, then somehow we feel like we have failed. That if we take breaks, we are not true artists or creatives. Taking breaks is essential to your craft. Learning boundaries and setting them is essential to the longevity of your career. Not setting proper boundaries can lead in being pulled into so many directions until you’re past the point of exhaustion. Persistence, boundaries, and awareness in your decisions is what will lead to longevity in your career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Born and raised in the midwest, but Texas since 2008. Nowadays, I am back and forth between CA + Austin + Dallas. At this time, I am focusing mostly on shooting fashion and portraits. Crafting my skill with consistency is what I am focusing on at the moment. When I’m not shooting I love cooking, hiking, and traveling.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, patience, and kindness are the three qualities that have made my career flourish. Being able to have patience during the rough times, being able to persist with the things that you want by putting yourself out there, and not being afraid of the word ‘no’. Kindness to those that you are working with and being a team player, since you are typically always on a crew for the job. Be kind, work hard and good things will come!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I am always looking for hair and makeup artists, models, and stylists to shoot with. I am always looking for up and coming brands to shoot for or small businesses as well. Collaboration is so important to me and making connections with other creatives because I truly believe it takes a whole team in order for the vision to come to life. I love meeting other photographers and artists as well, because I feel like they truly understand what you go through as a fellow creative.
