We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kathy Butler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kathy, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from watching my parents as a child. As a child growing up, I watched my parents continue to get up every day and go to work even when they didn’t feel like it. I watched my dad get off from one job and go directly to another one. I watched them continue to try when they were told “no” over and over again. My parents worked but they were also entrepreneurs who owned businesses throughout my life and when no one believed in them, they kept going. My dad told me “if you don’t believe in yourself, who else is going to believe in you?” I watched my mom when the world tried to tear her down, she stood tall and kept going. My parents had an unimaginable amount of strength, My dad is no longer here unfortunately, but my mom continues to be a symbol of resilience in spite of.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I moved to Atlanta from Savannah, Georgia and eventually ended up working for Corporate America for many years. During that time, my ex-husband and I purchased our first home in which we were having a terrible experience. I ended up negotiating our own purchase and doing all of the work on our behalf. I decided at that point that I wanted to be a real estate agent to help others NOT have to go through what we went through. I spent many years creating a “great” experience for my home buyers as well as educating them.
After being a real estate agent with other brokerages for many years, I decided to create my own brokerage. In 2019, I opened Kathy Butler Realty, LLC. and developed my company utilizing the positives from the other companies I had previously been with. My goal is to “educate” consumers because knowledge is key! So many people either miss out because they don’t know or make bad decisions because of what they don’t know. Here at Kathy Butler Realty, LLC., we don’t “throw” anyone away. If we can’t help you, we will do everything we can to find someone who can. Going the extra mile is what we do! Everyone receives the “red carpet” treatment.
My team is small compared to others I’m sure however, we are spread out to cover many parts of Atlanta, Georgia and surrounding counties to include Middle and South Georgia. Our services are catered to the real estate needs of our customers and clients. We are not voicemails or automated responses; we are real professionals with real solutions waiting to assist you. We not only have resources, but we individualize our first time home buyer workshops and are available on weekends and holidays for appointments. We also have a “Wealth Creations” series for the new year 2025 on Event Brite for buyers, sellers, and investors rather seasoned or brand new!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on what I think the most important qualities in this business, or any kind of business are resilience (don’t give up), believe in yourself, continuously improve yourself. Resilience is very important because you can’t do anything if you give up. Believe in yourself if you want others to trust and believe in you. You have to have confidence in yourself and your product and/or service. Even if you don’t know the answer, know where to find the answer because you’re not going to know everything. If you are not confident, no one will have confidence in you because it will show. Continuously grow and improve yourself and your business to keep current.
In the early parts of your journey, you may feel overwhelmed and uncertain. This is when your faith in yourself and your higher power plays a major part. When you feel like giving up, dig down deep and find more strength. Get up every day and expect a great day. Talk to yourself constantly and remind yourself of your dream and the sacrifices you’ve made to pursue your dream. Tell yourself that failure is not an option! Pray! Believe in yourself! Treat people right! Go above and beyond! Look forward and do better and be better than the day before!
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle this past year and currently I’m facing is a decline in the housing market. This was totally unexpected, and we were not ready for the decline. What I am doing is branching off in other areas to help consumers by offering a “Wealth Creations” series with different speakers who will cover different topics pertaining to building wealth, investing in both residential and commercial real estate, tax sales, taxes, credit restoration, etc.
The other area we are expanding in is commercial real estate and business brokering. Lastly for 2025, we are also diving into real estate development and construction as HDW Homes in honor of my parents Herbert and Dorothy Williams who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself!
