We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katie Gutierrez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katie below.
Hi Katie, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Sometimes confidence freely flows because it’s earned through preparedness, experience, practice, positioning, etc. but sometimes even with loads of that, confidence can be low for a slew of other reasons. In that case, confidence has to come by choice.
When I’m faced with situations in which my confidence is not freely flowing, I choose to cultivate it by two powerfully effective ways.
1. Choose to love and serve others – If I’m around people and feel my confidence is low, I focus on how I can feel love for the person I’m with even if it’s a networking event or I’m in front of a large audience or a new client. Tapping in to love allows me to create connections with people and that connection fuels me.
2. Body language – When I’m feeling a lack of confidence, it can feel natural to want to cross my arms and hunch my shoulders a little while leaning to one side. That body posture cultivates feeling down. When I notice myself slipping in to this posture, I purposely put my shoulders back, stand flat on both feet and put my arms down by my side. Standing this way gives the message to my brain and my heart that I choose confidence.
If I can anticipate a moment where lack of confidence is imminent I will jump up and down while smiling and it quickly lifts me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Finally, maximalism interior design in Miami. I’m a third-generation Miami native with a passion for transforming interior spaces into Biographical experiences with a maximalist outcome. With over 15 years of dedicated practice in interior design, along side my husband, Ruben, who is my business partner, I’ve cultivated a unique approach called Biographical Design. It’s a process which uses our client’s Biography as the foundation for future casting which is the primary influence for the spaces we make. We approach every project with the enthusiasm of a pineapple at a luau.
I work on high-profile projects, including the iconic Orangetheory Fitness brand (ask me about the wooly mammoth statue we installed) and flagship residences for influential figures. Like a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat, I make the impossible possible and the ordinary extraordinary.
While primarily working in South Florida, my portfolio spans the globe, from the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, and pasta rich towns of Italy to the dynamic urban landscapes of New York City. It’s been an adventure I’ve loved.
Specializing in high-end residential design and commercial spaces, my expertise encompasses a diverse range of environments, from serene spas and fitness centers to inviting retreat spaces, chic retail establishments, multi-family towers, dynamic company headquarters, and restaurants.
My work has been honored with awards and featured in numerous publications, cementing my reputation as a visionary in the field. As a distinguished Kips Bay Decorator Show House designer, I continuously strive to elevate the interior design industry through my signature Biographical Design approach.
Currently, I’m working on a luxury kitchen and bathroom showroom in the Miami Design District. It will be a show stopper slated to open in December.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three contributors to my greatest successes are:
1. I can’t stress it enough. Mentorships gave me my biggest leaps in my career. Early on, I knew that there was so much I didn’t know. Learning ‘how to’ was always important to me. I always have a mentor who can support my journey and paint the arrows on the path that guide my journey towards the fastest success.
2. Be authentic. Early on I was trying to mimic successful people around me and it left me unfulfilled and feeling flat and disconnected from my work. The more and more I started to lean in to my authenticity the more I started to attract people to me that were more aligned with projects that are more aligned the more I felt connected, inspired and in love with what I do. Now, people expect me to show up wearing a metallic pink pantsuit to a professional event and that fuels my happiness.
3. I spend a lot of time getting clear on the life I want to live and go after it with determination. For me, it all starts with energetics. I have chosen adventure, fun, and love as my guiding words for all things. When faced with a decision, it’s either those things or it’s no. In that way, my whole life starts to go fast in the direction that fuels me.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We are looking to collaborate with other luxury brands to create cross discipline events in support of luxury home owners that are about maximalism in Miami. if it’s quirky and cool we’re in.
