Meet Katina Douglas

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katina Douglas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Katina, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

I have faced many challenges in my life, from being homeless and losing my hearing to the profound grief of watching my mother die of cancer. The pandemic intensified my struggles, and my anxiety became overwhelming. In 2020, a kind neighbor gave me painting supplies, and it changed my life. Painting became my way to express and process my feelings. Through this creative outlet, I found healing and a means to share my story with others, turning my pain into something meaningful and beautiful.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

As a K-5 art educator, I have the joy and responsibility of fostering a love for art in young people, helping them build a creative foundation that can last a lifetime. It’s a unique and rewarding job because I get to witness their growth and excitement as they explore their artistic abilities. I’m also a professional artist, and I love that my students see me in both roles. They’re often amazed that I sell my work and exhibit it to audiences far and wide. Their curiosity, like asking if I’m rich or famous, is heartwarming. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be an inspiration to them. Additionally, painting allows me to share my personal story and the impact of my art with others, making every brushstroke meaningful.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

In my journey as both an artist and educator, the qualities that have been most impactful: vulnerability, the ability to visualize the story I want to tell through my paintings, and curiosity. Being open and vulnerable allows me to connect deeply with my experiences and express them authentically in my art. My ability to see and translate those stories into visual form helps others resonate with my work. Curiosity drives me to explore and learn continuously, enriching my creative process.

My advice to others is to listen to your heart, stay curious, and be brave. These qualities will guide you to express yourself authentically and inspire others along the way.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Many people have played a crucial role in my journey to success. My dad, who loved the arts, instilled a passion for creativity in me from a young age. My college art teacher, Bing Davis, was the first to show me how art could be a healing force. My love who made me realize my bravery, while my best friend constantly pushes me to grow. I am grateful for my friends who are always honest with me, and my children, whom I strive to make proud. My students inspire me daily, and I am touched by the beautiful strangers who admire my art. Each of these people has contributed to my path, and I carry their support with me in everything I do.
