We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Katrina Warren. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Katrina below.
Katrina, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I may be the only one with brown skin and curly hair, but those traits allow me to immediately stand out and be easily remembered. I use my differences to my advantage by creating new stereotypes of excellence to set the next generation of brown and black women up for success. If you are going to naturally stand out, stand in your uniqueness. I understand that some people need a moment to check their biases so I give them grace while also holding them accountable for their actions. Being a trailblazer isn’t always fun or easy, but it gets easier when you start seeing others come behind you and have a better experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a life coach who focuses on using a systematic approach to achieving one’s goals and dreams. The best part is seeing people light up when they tell you what they want for themselves.
I offer a range of services from free content and challenges on Youtube to one on one coaching to speaking engagements. Everyone learns differently so I also have a workbook to help clients work through their past to have the smoothest path to their future.
Life can be overwhelming, so having someone to help you break it down into manageable pieces can be the difference between analysis paralysis and aligned success.
As for my journey, I’ve taken the road less traveled. I’ve taught in Malawi, worked in soft diplomacy in Dubai, and backpacked through Europe and SE Asia. All of my experiences have led me here to support others because I have been so blessed to live out my own dreams.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Emotional Intelligence: Being able to articulate and regulate your emotions is beyond valuable in any discipline. There are a ton of books but just checking in with yourself whenever your emotions get intense is a good start.
2. The Art of Conversation: People love to connect and if you can learn to lead a conversation and keep someone engaged, it makes moving through life much more enjoyable.
3. Resting/The Importance Physical Health: Taking time to rest and recover was something it took me a long time to master. Operating in a constant state of exhaustion will seem exhilarating at first but the crash isnt worth it

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I do anything to bring me into the present moment and keep me there. For me, thats swimming or running. Overwhelm means we are either focused on the past or the future. Bringing your mind out of the spiral so that you can enjoy the moment, recover and plan is easier said than done.
First, take a breath, and complete a body scan.
Second, make a list of things that have consequences for not doing them today.
Third, prioritize that list and do NOTHING else if you finish that list.
Fourth, rest, theres probably more to do tomorrow and it will be easier if you arent exhausted.
