We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katy Quiroz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Katy, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I owe my work ethic and discipline to my father and my sister who showed me from a very young age what was possible when you refuse to give up. I grew up in a family that played and coached softball and was extremely good at it. My family’s name is very well known in that community, and even though I did not have a bone in my body that wanted to play softball myself I got to witness my father and sister make some serious history. I actually miss those days, playing with my barbies in the stands and eventually running a very successful snack bar by age 11 only proving that my father’s insane work ethic was rubbing off on his children. My dad and my sister filled newspaper articles, news stations and shattered records still standing in their names today. I am so proud.
My dad taught me to be extraordinary in everything I did, to be curious and ask questions (because that’s how we learned) and never to be afraid to take risks. I will always remember talking with him on the phone as I sobbed because I did not make the dance team, and even though dance was not his forte the work ethic and discipline ingrained in me was universal. He told me “You are not a quitter Katy, find a way”, and I did. My father was hard on us in a way I can only be extremely grateful for now. He was a winner on and off the field, someone who does not stay down for long. When I was little, he hurt his back and his whole world shifted. I can only imagine the fear he felt. I had the honor of witnessing him go back to college and obtain a master’s degree in education to fulfill one of his other passions, teaching. Of course, he set the bar extremely high in that regard as well. The man refused failure, and that planted the seeds of discipline and work ethic deep into my subconscious. A memory that lives in my heart forever was watching my dad walk across that stage at his graduation as I yelled from the top of my lungs in front of thousands of people “Way to go Dad!”.
My sister was my very first best friend, and an absolute legend on and off the field. She is small, but she is so mighty. She showed me what was possible not only as a woman, but as a Latina. My sister always wanted to make her community proud and even to this day you will find her inspiring upcoming athletes. I used to love watching her play because she was so aggressive, persistent and passionate. She loved what she did so much that she made a career out of it, just like our father taught us. I witnessed my sister compete professionally on the first ever women’s softball league and then become such an incredible hardworking mother to my Godsons. Our mother taught us to love, nurture and dream while our father embedded a “no excuses” mentality. I am who I am today because of these examples.
As I make my own way into the world and spiritual community, I take these values with me as they are a part of my core. I wear my last name so proudly and will always be grateful to the ones who went before me and made it possible. In my business when I feel energy is stagnant, I think of my father and my sister. I think of the fact that they made possible out of what seemed impossible, by any means necessary. I model these same qualities and hope to inspire others in the same way they inspired me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Clinical Hypnotherapist practicing in Arizona, although my clientele ranges across the globe (so grateful to be able to say that!) I have a deeply spiritual background thanks to my grandmother who I hope to write about soon. I started reading tarot cards at 14 and coined the term “Taropy” as I use tarot cards during my sessions. Over the last few years, I have gotten the incredible honor to work with mentors such as Jessica McLean, Candy Wheeler and Tania Lopez who have helped me transform Hyppie House of Healing into what it is today. I am your local and virtual healer and weirdo, and I am so deeply honored to hold space for you on your journey. I can help you rewire your subconscious through hypnosis, learn to meditate, balance your chakras and use the elements of the earth to center you. My work in hypnosis continues to grow as I am reaching more audiences. I am forever a student of this work, always willing to learn and grow while supporting you and your needs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Communication: This was so important in every single part of my continued journey. It can be hard to ask for what you need at times, and to even communicate effectively when you are not getting what you need. I feel it is such a valuable skill to attain, and something you have to continuously work at.
2. Consistency: Doing something over and over until you got it right. Long nights spent studying, hoping this would all pay off and it really does.
3. Integrity: I do not believe success is possible without it. I was always taught to stand behind everything I do, even if there were people who doubted me. I believe your morals for helping people should never be compromised.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I have tried to micromanage fate and the universe, and it just does not work. I simply sit in prayer and in meditation when I feel overwhelmed. I grew up covered in in my mothers and grandmothers’ prayers, and it is something that always feels like home. This is why I am so passionate about meditation because it has saved my life more times than I can count. I am a Pisces, so being near water always brings me back to center. Sometimes I just have a mid-day dance party to move that energy. It is important to remember that your current situation is not your final destination, you will get through this.
