We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katy Wicker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katy , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My crippling depression! Though joking (mostly), my entire life has constantly suffered from my mental health. It’s exhausting! However, it’s also instilled in me this drive to always maintain a positive outlook and appearance. Not only have I found it helps those around me, it helps me as well. It’s my own psychological trick to staying out of pits of depression, and thankfully, it works more often than not!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
These days, I seem to do a lot! But overall, I’m an actor and producer. In both areas, I explore various mediums, from commercials, to narrative projects, to voice over work. I also co-run a local film production company, HEK Yeah!, with my colleagues, Heather Mingo and Elvira Ibragimova. We’re currently in pre-production on a few fun projects – be on the lookout for more info this spring! No matter what part of my creative brain I’m flexing, I love that I have the freedom to take on multiple roles at once. I can be on set one day as an actor, and the next a producer – it’s the best for brains like mine that love both artistic and administrative tasks!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
(Sorry for my language, Mom), but I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without my ability to bullshit my way through life. It’s opened more doors than I could have ever imagined. How have I gotten away with this time and time again? By following three rules – 1. Be convincing enough to others when I say I can do something. 2. Make sure I teach myself whatever it is I say I can do to keep up said convincing. 3. Always be nice. People are more likely to help you if you’re nice. And it just helps make the world a better place. Master these three things and I swear the world will be your oyster.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I’m really proud of this answer – my ability to stand up for myself. I’ve never been good at speaking up in life – in school, at work, around family and friends; I’m really great at just taking my thoughts and feelings and shoving them as far down my brain as possible. I’ll save the personal details for my therapist, but as far as how my career has changed, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my ability to express myself – my thoughts, concerns, suggestions. It’s freeing to feel such self-confidence and I can’t wait to see how I continue to grow from it!
