Meet Kay Kent

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kay Kent. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kay below.

Kay, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Keeping creativity alive has been something I always love. Without creativity, life would simply not be fun. Although creativity has been hard to keep up with lately for me, I always seem to get my spark back, whether it be looking at Pinterest for inspiration or just writing down little blurbs for my book from time to time. I always try to write at least once a week just to keep my creativity alive.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

For those who may not know anything about me, let me give a brief introduction about myself:

I’m Kay Kent, Co-Editor-In-Chief for Girlhood Magazine. I currently reside in a small southern town in New Jersey and currently ending my junior year of high school, my third year studying Digital Media, in hopes to become a director and screenwriter. When I’m not busy, I’m usually scrolling on TikTok/Pinterest or writing my book!!

I first found Girlhood Magazine one night scrolling through Instagram – the post introduced the magazine and then said they were hiring. Given my background in graphic design and advocacy, specifically for women’s rights, I knew that this would be a great opportunity for me. So I applied to be a graphic designer and got accepted – from there is history.

Established in 2023, Girlhood Magazine’s mission from the start was to uplift girls around the globe and allow them a space to be heard. Although I originally joined the team as a way to boost my portfolio, this statement really aligned with my ideals. Growing up, my dad always encouraged me to advocate for issues that I thought needed to be brought to the public’s attention. During the COVID-19 quarantine, I got really interested in Feminism and started to read more and more about it. Before doing research, I thought Feminism was just “girl-power” – but little did I know that it would be so much more complicated than that. When I discovered what was really going on, I knew I wanted to join the fight for equality. Especially in 2022, when the Roe V. Wade case got overturned – I was constantly sharing posts on social media and using my voice to raise awareness towards this issue. Joining Girlhood Magazine only fueled my desire to advocate for women’s rights.

Being Co-Editor-In-Chief for a magazine is a lot to take on, but there’s always those little special moments. I feel the most special part about it is the connection we have with our team and audience. We always strive to try and produce content that our audiences can connect with and enjoy.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

In my journey, I think the best three things that were the most impactful was courage, knowledge/education, and awareness.

To start, courage is a huge quality to have. The ability to not let the smallest things make you give up can be a lot sometimes – being a junior in high school, it’s tiring and takes a lot of work, but if I cried over every test or quiz I’ve had, that would be silly. Having courage is a strong quality to have in life because it teaches you to overcome your fears and worries.

Knowledge and education is also very impactful to have in life. Without knowledge and the power to continue to educate yourself more and more, we wouldn’t see any progression in life. Yes, you have your basics like math, science, history, but the knowledge I’m talking about is being aware of the world you live in. What’s going on right now as we speak? That ties into awareness as you never know what could affect you and the others around you. Fight for what you think is right, even if it’s against everyone else’s beliefs.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

I’d say my biggest are of growth in the past 12 months is my social skills. From the outside, it seems like I’m a social butterfly, but inside it takes a lot to talk to people I really don’t know. See, when I’m doing an interview like this and all I have to do is type out my answers, I’m fine. But it gets to be when I have to stand up in front of people and speak. 12 months ago, I absolutely hated it and would refuse to do so or endlessly complain about it. But now that I’ve worked on it, I feel more confident about it; Being exposed to it more and more also helps. I work at a place where social skills are literally a key part of our job and I feel like as I’ve worked more, those skills are being refined.
