Meet kayla enright

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kayla Enright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Kayla, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I find my purpose every day and find new purposes daily. I’m so excited where this skill will take me, especially as I continue to hone it and learn from the fantastic network I have in this industry. I’ve always wanted to see the world with my camera, and I am on a great path for that to be a reality very soon. It’s exciting. The more I love what I do and continue to work hard at this passion of mine, the more successful I am.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I didn’t really focus on food photography until 2020 and everything shut down. I was working part-time at a restaurant with my partner and trying to figure out what kind of photographer I wanted to be. The world shut down and my restaurant job went goodbye, so I tried to work with brands online in the form of product photography. I photographed throughout the pandemic in my two-bedroom apartment makeshift studio and was able to keep afloat. By the end of 2020, I felt my restaurants hurting; everybody was hurting financially. Being in the hospitality industry is like being in a brotherhood, and it made me sad to see so many businesses hurting and shuttering. I wanted to help by doing the only thing I could be useful at: photography. I reached out to restaurants offering my services for free and was really able to foster amazing new relationships with clients I still have today. Business owners were appreciative of what I was offering and I was able to grow this new niche of mine. I started to really just focus soley on working with restaurant and hospitality clients and have learned so much along the way. Now, I work with hotels, restaurants, and travel boards and am really able to start experiencing the world more.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
We take the internet for granted. I had absolutely no idea how to start marketing my hospitality photography, it’s such a specialized niche and not a lot of books are out there. I scoured the internet in other cities and countries to look over and learn about how I started such a business, what I should be charging, etc. For anything you’re starting, there are so many tools and different ways to approach researching your business type or startup online.

Obviously don’t be afraid to fail. You’re going to and that’s okay. You’re going to have clients that ghost you, it just happens. Keep going; for every ghost client, you attain a new, return client for your business.

Don’t ever stop learning and always be open to criticism.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal clients are hotels, resorts, and restaurants that change their menus seasonally or quarterly.
