We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kayla Griffin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
In the beginning, I battled with comparison. There are so many talented photographers out there, and I often felt like the “not enough” girl in a room full of “already made it” women. But God has this way of reminding me that I wasn’t called to compete — I was called to create. When I pick up my camera, I’m not just taking pretty pictures; I’m capturing the fingerprints of the Creator on His people. Psalm 139 says we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” and I get the privilege of showing my clients what that truth looks like through a lens.
My confidence really began to grow when I stopped asking, “Do they like me?” and started asking, “Am I being faithful with the gift He gave me?” That’s when the pressure lifted. My photography became more than a business — it became ministry. And every session, every wedding, every portrait is a reminder that I don’t have to prove my worth. I just have to walk in it.
So if you want to know how I developed confidence and self-esteem? I stopped trying to manufacture it. I rooted myself in who God says I am (Ephesians 2:10: His masterpiece), and I built a business that points the lens back to Him. The rest followed.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a lifestyle and wedding photographer, but at the heart of it, I’m really a storyteller. What excites me most about photography is capturing real moments — the raw laughter, the tears, the quiet in-betweens that can’t be staged or posed. I want people to look back at their photos and feel the story, not just see the picture.
Beyond my business, I serve as a Creative Team Lead at my church, which keeps me grounded in my “why” — using art and creativity to glorify God and point people back to Him. I also have to mention i’m a part time nanny, because I truly love the kids I care for, and they remind me daily how beautiful and fleeting each stage of life really is.
As for what’s next, I see my photography brand continuing to grow not just as a business but as a ministry — a space where clients feel seen, loved, and valued. Whether it’s expanding into bigger weddings, new creative projects, or simply pressing deeper into authentic storytelling, my focus will always be on capturing the moments that matter most.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been faith, authenticity, and perseverance. Faith kept me grounded when comparison or fear tried to take over. Authenticity shaped my photography because I chose to lean into my own style — capturing raw, unposed moments — instead of trying to look like everyone else. And perseverance pushed me to keep showing up, even when growth felt slow.
My advice? Root yourself in why you started, stay true to your voice instead of copying trends, and don’t quit just because the process feels hard — that’s usually where the breakthrough is.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
First and foremost, it’s been God — every step of my journey has been covered in His guidance and grace. But I also wouldn’t be here without my friends and family. Mainly my mom, but overall they’re the ones who constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone, reminded me of my worth when I doubted myself, and never stopped hyping me up along the way.
