Meet Kayla Perlstein

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kayla Perlstein a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kayla, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

A lot of my resilience comes from my personal life experiences and the support of my family.

I had three major surgeries before the age of 18. I had heart surgery when I was very very young, lip surgery due to a hemangioma when I was around 7, and a spinal fusion when I was 17. With my spinal fusion, I had to teach my body how to walk again, get out of bed by myself, workout with modifications, etc.

My parents constantly reminded me growing up and still remind me to this day, what doesn’t destroy me only makes me stronger.

When it came to my career, I kept going to different interviews but kept being told the same thing, I didn’t have enough experience. How was I to get experience when people kept telling me no? I felt like no one would take a chance on me, so I took a chance on myself. I started signing up for online and in person courses, I was reading a lot of books and articles and listened to podcasts and webinars. I did everything I could to teach myself more about Social Media Marketing. My freelance career shortly turned into a full on business as I started getting more and more clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Kayla. I from Birmingham, AL and currently live in Nashville, TN. I graduated from the University of Alabama (RollTide) with a degree in Restaurant Hospitality Management for event planning. But, I didn’t exactly end up there…

During college and post graduation, I spent about 10 years in the music industry. I am very thankful for everyone that took a chance on me and gave me an opportunity, but I knew that world was not for me. So when I started interviewing for job in the marketing space, I kept getting told I did not have enough experience. I started to doubt myself. How can I get experience if no one will take a chance on me? So I took a chance on myself.

Before I started freelancing, I took classes both online and in person, I read a lot of books and articles, listened to podcasts and webinars, and started networking. My freelance career soon turned into a full on business as I started signing more and more clients. That is how Goldenbird Marketing became what it is today. The name “Goldenbird” comes from my great grandmother. Her name was Fega Golda which translates to Golden Bird.

Goldenbird Marketing is a Social Media Marketing company that specializes in working with small businesses, start ups, and business owners. Through highly personalized support, we work with our clients to create a tailored strategy, unique to their needs, to maximize their digital presence and community engagement. We also love working with other marketing agencies that don’t offer our services to come together as one and deliver one hell of an experience for a client. We have been in business for 8 years and it has been pretty amazing to watch us grow.

If there is one piece of advice I could give to other aspiring business owners or entrepreneurs, it would be to TAKE THE RISK. I took many in my life, and without taking those risks, I would not be where I am today.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Organization, communication, and resilience helped impact my journey. For the first few years of my business, I was doing everything on my own. Organization was and has always been an important piece for me. I not only keep things in my Google calendar, but I use a written planner and color code each client. If you are not good with staying organized, I would suggest finding some tools to help with this like Monday.com or Asana.

Communication is KEY. I have very close working relationships with my clients. I like to make sure they know I am there for them and that they will always have access to me. When clients work with me, they know they are being heard on their needs and concerns. Follow ups are also key when it comes to keeping things from falling through the cracks.

When it comes to advice, I will continue to share this….TAKE THE RISK. But on top of that, don’t be afraid to start from the bottom. I think a lot of people these days forget that and think that things should be handed to them. When I was building my portfolio, I was working with clients for free or very low prices. I wanted to prove myself but also learn along the way.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always looking to collaborate! I love collaborating or partnering with other Marketing Agencies. My company specializes in Organic Social Media Management, so when it comes to SEO, Paid Ads, Websites, etc, I love being able to refer other companies I work with. I have also partnered/collaborated with other Agencies that DO offer social media services, but they might not have the capacity to take on more, so they work with me.

If you are looking to collaborate or partner, feel free to contact me at [email protected]!
