We recently connected with Kayla Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from me growing up and watching my mother pursue her passion in doing hair as well. I watched my mother make things happen regardless of her being a young mom, for example my mother would bring me to the salon that she worked at in Harlem, she worked with two celebrity stylist starting off as just a assistant braider then worked her way up to a stylist herself, and i’d always admire her work and how much of a hard worker she is. My mother is now a loctician, braider and specializes in natural hair As I grew up I always was goal oriented and knew I wanted to be just like my mother doing hair as well. I taught me how to manage myself and my own business. Every day I do hair and accept new clients it motivates me to expand my services and to keep going.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My story stems from my family, I grew up in a house with two hairstylists which were my mother and my aunty tasha. Watching them made me certain that I also wanted to be a hairstylist as well! My main focus with my business is more geared towards wig installs and weave services. i am focused on expanding my services and even to start selling hair and hair tools and really make my own brand. My end goal with my business is to own my own salon and be able to run a nonprofit to give back to my community through hair especially to young adolescent woman because, though I had examples and hands on learning there are many young and even older woman that who may not have access to those things and I would love my business and brand to be able to provide that. What I am most excited and proud to share is that I started my business doing hair straight out of my room or even packing a bag and traveling to clients, I now have to keys to my first ever suite to do hair and take clients out of professionally and that I am so grateful for. With this opportunity given to me I am now able to offer a wider range of services when booking with me and I can now focus on the launch of my wigs and bundles, as well as the hair tools and supplies I plan on selling !

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that I feel has been impactful in my journey would be creativity, good communication and resilience! My advice to anyone starting off as a hairstylist is to always carry and tend to those three qualities because they will get you very far. Always think out of the box when it comes to your ideas and styling, people are always looking for the next newest thing. Never have a limiting mindset and challenge your craft. Having good communication will set you up to be able to align yourself with many different clients and opportunities! Lastly being resilient will show to others how much you are motivated and devoted to your craft and attract many people towards you and what you are trying to build.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am definitely looking for people to collaborate with! I’m looking to collaborate with other stylist, beginners and hairstylists that have been in the game for years. I also would love to collaborate with content creators so we can help build off each other. I would even love to collaborate with makeup artists where we can both display our services hand and hand. That would be so exciting for me! I can always be reached by my business email @[email protected] or my instagram which is the.karmakollection
