We recently connected with Kayla Sutterer and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic definitely comes from my parents. Growing up, I watched both of them work incredibly hard to give my siblings and me a great childhood. They taught me the value of showing up, giving your all, and doing the work to create the best outcome possible.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a hairstylist, and I absolutely love what I do. Helping people feel more confident in themselves is what drives me every single day. I’ve created a space where clients not only get their hair done, but also feel safe opening up about things most people shy away from — and that means everything to me.
I’m especially passionate about hair thinning and hair loss. Being able to offer treatments that help restore healthy hair growth is truly rewarding. Watching someone’s hair go from brittle and weak to strong and thriving is one of the best parts of my job.
At the same time, I love expressing my creative side through color — there’s nothing like transforming a look and seeing the joy on someone’s face. We’re currently working on launching new hair loss treatments, and I’m so excited to see the results and share them with clients.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My advice to anyone just starting out: be like a sponge. Take every opportunity to learn and soak up all the education you can. Even refresher courses can teach you something new or remind you of something you’ve forgotten.
Also, find a great mentor—someone who’s not only skilled, but also willing to invest in your growth. Having the right teacher to guide and support you makes all the difference.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I’ve had so much support through the challenges and early stages of my career, and I’m beyond grateful for it. My family has always been there for me—whether I needed to vent, try something new, or simply feel supported.
I also have to shout out my two incredible mentors, Tasha and Carlie. They’ve played such a big role in my growth by sharing their knowledge, providing the tools I needed to succeed, and always being my biggest cheerleaders. I truly wouldn’t be where I am without them.
