KAYLA, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My “work ethic” stems from my design—aimed at being as helpful, responsive, and efficient as possible. But it also comes from my personal experiences. I’ve been working since I was 15 years old. Growing up, when I’d hear my parents say “no” to things I wanted, I learned to earn money by doing chores or taking on other tasks. That taught me the value of hard work. I realized early on that nothing comes easy and everything must be earned. The saying, “Faith without works is dead,” really resonates with me because it reminds me that effort is needed to achieve the results you desire. I love putting in the work and seeing the rewards unfold.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Kayla Warren, and I am the CEO and founder of Resumesbyk, established in 2021. My mission is to assist clients in achieving their career goals, and I’ve had the privilege of helping over 300 clients along the way. To support my clients in reaching their objectives, I offer a range of services, including expert resume rebuilding, job leads to help secure that next dream job, interview preparation tips, and career mentoring. I dedicate a significant amount of my time attending career fairs, visiting schools, and collaborating with various organizations to assist individuals with job placement.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been attention to detail, empathy, and continuous learning. As a resume writer, every word and formatting choice matters. Small details can make a big difference in how a resume is perceived by hiring managers or automated systems. Developing a strong attention to detail helped me craft resumes that not only highlight a client’s skills but also align with industry standards and specific job requirements. Understanding my clients’ unique experiences, goals, and challenges has been key to creating resumes that truly represent them. It’s not just about writing a list of achievements, but about telling their story in a way that resonates with employers. Empathy allowed me to connect with clients on a deeper level and provide advice that was tailored to their specific needs. The job market and resume writing trends are always evolving. Whether it’s keeping up with changes in applicant tracking systems (ATS) or learning new career development strategies, staying up to date has been crucial in ensuring my clients’ resumes are competitive. This has also helped me offer additional services like interview coaching and career mentoring.
For those early in their journey, my advice is Pay attention to detail in everything you do, from resume formatting to client communications. Being meticulous will set you apart. Try to put yourself in your clients’ shoes. Understand their struggles, aspirations, and unique qualities to truly help them tell their career stories. Stay updated on industry trends, ATS changes, and new resume writing techniques. Attend workshops, read articles, and network with others in your field to continually refine your craft.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
The ideal client for my career services is someone looking to change industries, roles, or career paths. They might need help rebranding themselves and making their skills and experiences transferable.Individuals who have a targeted role or industry in mind and need tailored resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles that align with specific job descriptions. Recent graduates who need help crafting their first professional resumes to executives looking to refine their personal brand and showcase high-level leadership experience. Overall, the ideal client for my business is someone who values professional expertise, is proactive about their career goals, and is ready to invest in themselves to move forward in their job search or career growth
