Meet Kaylee LaMoine

We were lucky to catch up with Kaylee LaMoine recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaylee, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
I was fired from my first “big girl job” and now I own and operate a six-figure video production company. It was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I was 24 when I moved to a new city for my first big girl job and after just four months of being at that job, I was fired. The reason for being fired was not for my lack or effort or ability to do my job, but my boss has some major mental health issues (which I didn’t understand at the time) that she was not addressing and that caused her to put a lot of blame on me, which resulted in me being fired. I thought my life was over. I panicked. I didn’t know what to do.

As I was bawling in my car so many thoughts ran through my mind… How did this happen? How will I pay my bills? I just moved here for this job and now I can’t even afford rent. I don’t want to go back home. And these thoughts consumed me for months. I filed for unemployment. That also haunted me. I’m 24 years old, have a college degree and I’m filing for unemployment. HOW?!?!! How could this be? How will I get another job when I wasn’t even at my first one for more than four months?

Fast forward a couple months when I got a job for a hosta plant grower and he hired me to create informational videos of the plants. So here I am, 24, in the big city with my big girl pants on and I’m making videos of plants. I felt foolish, like where did I go wrong? Looking back now, that time was so pivotal to my entire career choice. I fell in love with creating. I realized that I could do this… I could make creating videos a career, a passion and a purpose.

My boss was very hands off, so I had full creative freedom to make these videos what they were. I loved it. Even though I was creating videos about something I had zero interest in, it was more about the art of creating the video and the challenge of making something out of nothing. I was hooked.

I was only at that job for a summer and then I started working for a trade show manufacturing company doing their marketing and sales, but still getting to create videos for them. I am forever grateful for this job because it taught me a lot about sales and helping people with their business needs. I started as the front desk receptionist and at the end of my four year time period there I was the presidents right hand person. I moved my way up the ladder and they even created a new position for me because I was doing things no one else had done.

In 2017 I took the “leap of faith” and went full time in my own business. I didn’t like the phrase “leap of faith” because I knew that I was going to be successful. I knew I had the discipline, the determination, and the personality to do anything I wanted to do. And then add the fact that I LOVED what I doing and there was not question that this was what I was going to do in life. I’m a videographer, a filmmaker, a CEO, a female entrepreneur, and I just ate it up. I love it so much.

I primarily filmed wedding videos in the beginning and now I’m working with some of the most well-known businesses in the world like Prada and Lululemon. Getting fired was the best thing that ever happened to me because it made me realize the potential that I had. It was never my purpose to make money for someone else or for someone else to be my boss. I was my own boss and I knew that this is what I was meant to do.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the owner of a video production company called “Kaylee LaMoine Film Co” – we love working with brands but more specifically, female entrepreneurs.

I started out on my own in 2017 as Kaylee LaMoine Productions, and now the business has developed into so much more. I have a team of amazing women who work with me and our passion is story telling but in a modern and on-brand way.

Our luxury productions are all about making a statement. We use the latest visual techniques and technologies to make sure that your message stands out from the crowd. From stunning visuals to intricate sound design, our team of creative professionals have what it takes to bring your brand’s vision to life in an unforgettable way.

I have always been obsessed with taking videos. I was that girl in high school who always had her point and shoot Canon camera with her wherever I went. Whether it was on the bus to a sporting event or in the classroom. I always had my camera on me. At that time, I had no idea I could even make a career out of creating videos but it is my passion and my purpose and I’m so grateful I get combine the two and call it “my job”.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Confidence – I knew early on that I was really good at what I do. I not only could create compelling visual stories and keep the viewer glued to the screen the entire time, but I carried myself in a way that was confident but also, approachable. I gained people’s trust that way. I always made them feel like I could solve their problems and I could do with ease. Not in a cocky way, but in a confident and humble way.

2. Personality – I have been blessed with an outgoing personality. It’s easy and fun for me to connect with people, get to know them, get to know their business, but also, their hopes, dreams, goals, etc. In my line of work I am meeting new people on a daily basis and that connection is something I thrive off of. Which brings me to number three…

3. Connection – I love connecting with people. I can tell very early on in our conversation if this is someone who I can connect with or or not. That paves a path for the people that I work with. If we connect on a personal level then I know we can connect on a professional level as well.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I thrive off of connection – I love connecting with new people, other creatives, entrepreneurs, etc. and I believe every connection has an intention and purpose. I love creating with a purpose. Whether you are a big brand looking for an amazingly creative team to work with or you have a personal passion project you’re looking to get off the ground… we are here to create.
