We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaylee Ness a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaylee, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Burnout is something I have experienced in many different areas and stages of life. I feel my perfectionistic qualities cause me to overwork myself in pursuit of a perfect product. Whether this was in school, sports, work or even hobbies, the pursuit of perfection tended to lead me on the road to burnout. I have come to realize there is no such thing as a perfect product, and there can always be more work applied. If I waited until everything was perfect, nothing would ever be complete. This realization alone has helped in avoiding burnout, because I can complete a project thoughtfully without wearing out resources of time and energy.
Another factor I noticed contributing to burnout in my life was a lack of presence. Being overcome by work, even in time spent with family or friends, would lead to feeling as though I had no break. The constant worry and thought about something so outside the present moment can be incredibly draining. I feel being present can immensely help in avoiding burnout, and allow for moments to recharge.
Understanding the pursuit of perfection is really a path of incompletion and burnout, as well as valuing the present moment and time dedicated outside a project, have allowed me to overcome and avoid burnout in my life today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
It is my belief that the most impactful quality in being successful in most areas of life is consistency. Being consistent in an endeavor is where true progress is seen. You cannot expect results from only working out 3 weeks of the year, but you may see notable results working out 3 days of the week consistently for a year. Consistency breeds success. Without consistency, you do not see the compounding benefits and the habitual routinization of the steps toward your goals.
However, even before you can be consistent, you have to find some sort of direction. Therefore, defining a clear, distinct direction or goal is also necessary in being successful in any area of life. Think back to the workout analogy. Say you never set clear workout goals, but you began running consistently. You may become frustrated if all along you were working to build muscle, because you did not set a clear direction to begin with, and therefore did not select the correct type of workout aligning with your goals. You may be putting in the miles but all along driving in the wrong direction. The type of work you are doing matters just as much as the amount you are doing it.
The third impactful quality is authenticity. In order to pave a fulfilling and meaningful path, it is important to be authentic. I find myself straying from being authentic when I start to live according to how I believe others will perceive me. Living according to an imagined perception will fail to reach others just as it will fail to fulfill yourself. It is only until I release the worry of perception that I feel fully authentic. You have the power to relate and captivate others when you are authentically you.
Altogether, my recipe for success begins with direction, continues with consistency and must be executed authentically.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Action is the only thing to ease my anxiety when I am overwhelmed. The rumination of thoughts only allows for further self deterioration. Taking small steps in a forward direction gives me a sense of productivity, decisiveness and progress that immediately calms my busy mind.
Through action I ease my anxiety. Discovering what is within my control and taking action toward it is much more productive than ruminating on what is out of my control.
In a moment of overwhelm, it is all easier said than done. Sometimes, all you can do is remind yourself that the feeling is temporary, and will soon pass.
