We were lucky to catch up with Kaylen, Kelsey & Kristen Kassab K3 Sisters Band recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaylen, Kelsey & Kristen Kassab, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
We are three sisters who formed the K3 Sisters Band (K3SB) in 2009. Our names are Kaylen (23), Kelsey (22) and Kristen (19). We are pleased to briefly discuss where our optimism came from, and how we maintain a positive and encouraging attitude even when life’s challenges knock you down and discourage you.
Well before we formed the K3SB we began performing as early as 3 to 5 years old in our parent’s band. We didn’t know it at the time, but we were being exposed to the “brighter side” of life. And it began to create a lifestyle of optimism, and a “can do” attitude in all of us. Sure, we were nervous going on stages in front of hundreds or thousands of people, but because our parents, and at times our grandfather were on stage with us it calmed our nerves. The people that came to our shows were so encouraging and excited to see us play the little fiddles and sing folk and gospel songs backed by the band that they usually exploded into applause and gave us standing ovations to encourage us.
The euphoria that came along with performing at such an early age gave us the inspiration and drive to get better. We began taking private violin lessons, vocal training and acting in home school plays for elementary age students. The constant rehearsing was quite hard, and at times frustrating. We also missed out on some activities that other kids enjoyed. But, our family kept reminding us that we came from 4 generations of musicians and singers so we kept trying. When the tears of insecurity came upon one of us, the other 2 sisters encouraged the one that was down to keep going and not give up. If all 3 of us were down our parents talked to us and it helped. Sometimes this meant taking a break from rehearsing.
Over the years we developed skills of performing on multiple instruments, and singing in 3-part harmony. Our mom holds a degree in music and vocal training so it was helpful. And it sure didn’t hurt that our dad plays 8 different instruments!
We soon learned that no matter what happened on stage or in an interview we must keep our cool during what we now call “the fog of war.” It also helped when we began reviewing videos of our performances. It was pointed out to us that no matter what went wrong or how shaky we were feeling, we didn’t have to show it on our faces. Also, our dad taught us about body language in order for us to realize that most of communication to an audience is non verbal! So as we practiced appearing calm and confident a sense of optimism crept into our souls. And that optimism and confidence is felt by the audience.
Because we were home schooled from the start, our curriculum at times included some subjects that were a little beyond our ability to comprehend at the time. This is because our dad and mom are both highly educated, and hold degrees in music as well as psychology, philosophy, sociology and history. Each year we were exposed not only to the “3Rs” but to the positive values in many of the great world religions. We learned that a common thread is that all people are valuable to society. People in every culture and country around the world need and want to be loved and accepted by others. Despite what some people say, we learned that there are many paths to finding fulfillment in life. And that’s okay with us!
For almost 10 years we helped share such positive ideas with other home schooled students in Texas as well as in church programs because our parents had jobs working with young people. They brought us on stage all the time to help encourage and entertain others. We even performed educational programs called “The Power of 3” for dozens public elementary schools in their gyms or cafeterias. In the process, we learned that when you reach out to others in love and with an optimistic spirit, they almost always respond in kind. And, when we began getting the positive vibes back from students, teachers, and civic leaders it served to increase our optimism and understanding that all of us want to be accepted and loved. And it was fun!
But, then we were faced with a series of devastating situations. We began to receive hate and false accusations from “internet trolls” who were not impressed with our performances and content that was exploding on TikTok and other social media platforms where we were posting original music and skits. We were shocked, hurt and scared! Some comments outright said that we were not really playing our instruments. Others said we were not really singing. Others made fun of the name we chose for our band even though it was only because all our names start with the letter K. Some even threatened us on line, and made fun of our looks.
We talked about this for days and months. Sadly, we learned that receiving one or two hateful comments can overshadow hundreds of loving and positive comments. What should we do? What could we do? This shook our optimistic spirits to the core.
We discussed this with our parents and eventually decided to compose a band motto that might somehow address these issues. And so we did. Incredibly, it has become world famous now because it deals with how to defend yourself and others from bullying and name calling. It’s called the #K3Motto and it reads: “I will always believe in myself and celebrate my life and the lives of others. I will accept the music and customs of others as long as they are not harmful to anyone. I will stand against bullying of any kind and choose love over hate.”
We also wrote several anti-bullying songs, and created videos of them. The first one was titled “Sticks and Stones,” and to this day we perform it at many of our concerts. It remains a fan favorite. But the incredible thing is what has happened over the years with the motto and songs to keep our optimism going.
As we quoted our #K3Motto and performed our original songs which dealt with the wrongs of bullying, hate and mean spirited comments we began to hear back from hundreds of fans and friends. They sent us letters and messages in which they let us know that they were also victims of bullying and hate. We were so happy to interact with these friends on social media and share our common ideas. And together we encouraged each other to stand strong against bullying and hate, and remain optimistic about life instead of giving in to returning hate for hate.
These interactive relationships continue to this day during and after our live stream concerts, meetups and video premieres on all our social media platforms and by US mail. We meet young, and not so young people from over 50 countries every week who share our optimistic views of life and strive to get along and support others despite their country of origin, race, religion or political views. It’s great.
And we now have a group of “moderators” who help us keep the peace and love during our live stream concerts by warning hateful viewers who comment mean or off color ideas. And, they get blocked from the chat if they don’t comply. Over the years this online support group and fandom has taken on the name K3SB FAM which stands for K3 Sisters Band Family. We truly feel the K3SB FAM is a part of our extended family.
So, the future picture for us is to keep performing, keep writing music, keep producing content that encourages others, and keep building each other up with optimism and love. We know you can’t please all the people all the time, but we are trying to motivate, encourage, and love those who are willing to offer us the same!
For more info about Kaylen, Kelsey and Kristen’s K3 Sisters Band feel free to visit k3sistersband.com where you can listen to all their music or watch their past concert videos for free. Or you can follow them on social media @k3sistersband,
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The three of us run the K3 Sisters Band as a direct to fan operation. We also get help from K3SistersMomma Jamie and The Bruce.
We support our fans and viewers by offering our music and videos for free. They give back to us in the form of various social media tips. Because social media views create income for us, we send all the fan tips back to the K3SB FAM via free band merch and postage.
We write and perform all our own music which encompasses pop, rock, roots. Celtic, country and instrumental originals. By writing all our own music we avoid the copyright issues faced by many independent artists.
We have dozens of new songs in our pipeline, and are excited to reveal them one by one at our weekly live stream concerts currently scheduled for the rest of 2023 on Saturdays at 3pm CST on YouTube, TikTok and Facebook @k3sistersband.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learn new instruments, sing for people, or do public speaking. Study world history in order to understand things better, and make wise choices in life.
Always surround yourself with people who believe in you, and believe in yourself.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
We have written so many original songs that we cannot get them all into production. So we are taking it one song at a time.
