Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kaylie Holland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kaylie, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I believe that it’s important to get to know yourself well. Typically we can be our own worst enemy so we need to learn to speak to ourselves with grace. Once there is the development of a strong sense of self, the haters become meaningless. Who cares if someone tells you that you can’t do something? As long as you remind yourself daily that a strong vision and hard work will help you acomplish your goals, than anything really is possible. You can walk away from haters, but you can not walk away from yourself. Believing in yourself will bring you to closer your dreams.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have always had a difficult time choosing which part of my story defines me as a professional. As an artist, it’s necessary to continually learn and gradually adapt your style. I feel that my career choices represent the journey of different intrests that I have had over the years. I am a professional make-up artist who specializes in music and special effects. I am the head of marketing at Make-up Designory. I host anual art shows to show case my paintings on canvas and my sculptures. In the past week, I have just started my own fashion company named Amends, which specializes in upcylced denium. At the end of the day, I am Kaylie, a Los Angeles based creative professional.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Acting Classes
2. Meeting new people
3. Loving Work & Working Hard
Acting classes can teach you some of the most vitial skills for presentation and self understanding. To become a new charector in a theatre, you first must know who you are. Improv teaches you how to be quick on your feet, to speak with dictation and volume and how to engage with an audience.
The best life lessons I have learned have always come from meeting new people in communities. I have always loved hanging out with older women who have taught me everything from how to cook, to dance and to care for my hair & beauty. Whenever I am in a rut, I love to go salsa dancing with my friends. Meeting new people has allowed me to be open to change, adaptability and growth which I believe are vital qualities for any buisness development.
From a young age, I was surrounded by passionate and hard working people at Make-up Designory. Make-up artists are some of the most hard working people I know. Because of that, I have always had a strong work ethic and maintained a positive attitude the best that I could. As a professional, it’s important to always keep your head up and to push through obstacles with grace.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
In the beginning of working with anyone for the first time, I tend to ask them, “What are two things you are good at, and one thing that you’re bad at… quick! go” By asking them this question and requesting they answer quickly you can get a sense of what positions they might be best at. I typically make sure to never assign them any work that has something to do with their bad side.
Once you get past that initial question, then I do believe it’s necessary to continually grow, to educate yourself on a regular basis and to develop new skills. One can become pretty well rounded in their strengths without having to force themselves to do something they inherently struggle with.
I believe this approach works best: keep learning but don’t force it. Some things we are just going to be bad at, and that’s ok. The best fix to that problem is to find other people who’s talents complement your own and to work as a team.
