Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to KC Pen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
KC, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from my mother. My mother instilled kindness and respect in me from a young age. I also learned from being kind majority of the time that some people take it for weakness. I later learned who to be kind and respectful towards and who to act accordingly with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is KC Pen and I’m a spoken word poet. I was born in Miami, Florida and spent my early childhood growing up in North Miami. In the early 2000s I moved to New York and spent majority of my life there before moving back to Miami 7 years ago. Poetry and expressing myself through the arts is my key to survival. It gives me life being able to create. Poetry in Miami has grown so much since I’ve moved backed and I’m glad to be a member of Miami Poetry Club and the co-founder of Pop-Up Poetry MIA. Our next Pop-Up Poetry MIA event will be on Saturday February 21st at The Camp Gallery in North Miami from 3pm-6pm.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities/skills that were most impactful to me during my journey are resilience, the ability to take constructive criticism well & my ambition. My advice to folks who are early in their journey is to learn from your mistakes/experiences and listen without judgement when people with wisdom are speaking to you.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth the past 12 months have been my relationship with my self. I’ve learned to give myself my flowers, give myself grace and show myself love. In the past I struggled with this and always had plenty of love to give to the people in my life and worried about myself last. I’ve learned to be more selfish and less selfless and understand that I’m not wrong for wanting to put myself first.
