We were lucky to catch up with Keary Alaniz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keary, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from having dealt with a lot of life’s problems early on. I am sober in recovery from alcohol addiction. The healing process has played a part in who I am today. It used to be difficult to manage my emotions when I was constantly drunk or high, and that was making life harder to deal with. When I was growing up I had good parents, but we didn’t have a lot of money. It felt like addiction was something that was always affecting my life or someone close to me. I think generational trauma has an effect on everyone to some extent. Now that I’m clean and sober, I have a lot more control over my emotions and actions. My self image was affected because of some of the choices I made. Nevertheless, I refuse to give up on my self finding myself as a newly evolved person. I am learning to love myself again. I am resilient for overcoming my dependency on substances, and you can be too.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a Mexican-American music artist from Dayton, Ohio, I write produce and perform a variety of different styles of music. I have a lot of music out and most of it is in the realm of Indie Hip-Hop. In January of 2025, I released an album “Can’t Quit” which features 12 new songs. It is available to stream and purchase on all major digital streaming platforms. The opener track is “Can’t Quit” where I rap about the pressure of being an independent artist. The album is loosely themed around the motif, “as an artist you can take a break, but you’re not allowed to quit,” I am passionate about music. and as we all know it’s very difficult to make money in the entertainment industry. After spending years learning to become the best music Artist I can be, I’m happy to say that I will never quit this passion of mine.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge I will give are resilience, honesty, and versatility. As an independent artist you will need resilience, and this was impactful for me when I lost the majority of my work in the music industry after the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world. I kept learning to produce music regardless of missing the live element, and when things opened back up I found new ways to sustain myself and keep making art despite the financial obstacles. Honesty is the best policy, and burning bridges is never beneficial and shouldn’t be your plan in life when it comes to relationships. I think you should avoid burning bridges at all costs. Stay sharp, you never know when the skills that you learned previously in life could become lucrative in the near future. This is why I say never give up on yourself as an artist no matter how slept on you may feel.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m looking to collaborate with people online that are in other countries outside the US, but if you are in the US that is fine as well. I want to expand my feature catalogue and I’m fully open and willing to do the work that gets us both a good final result. I engineer and produce using the latest Ableton Live software. I want to build a team of people who want to create the next big wave of music. I want to work with folks who can see the vision in the long run and are willing to put the quality in the music first before trying to market themselves and gain traction. I prefer to work with people who can produce their own music or who have access to studio equipment. We can get a song mostly if not done in a day or two, there are no excuses for why it should take months or years for work to get done, so I’m looking for people who are punctual as well.
