We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kecia Myers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kecia , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from becoming a mother At the age of 16. My life would change forever. My life was no longer just about me anymore. It was now my son and me. Faced with the financial, mental, and physical responsibility of raising him forced me to grow up extremely fast. I learned how to prioritize my life because I still had the responsibility of finishing High School and work to take care of my son. As he grew into a toddler I started noticing a lack of mental actions as he aged. Turns out, he was diagnosed as a special needs child. (TMH) Trainable Mentally Handicapped. I became very discouraged. This was not the life I envisioned for myself. Caring for a special needs child as a teen is extremely frightening. I was determined to do what was needed to be there as the best parent possible. This I would say is absolutely where my resilience comes from.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My beginnings started as a single mother, taking my son to the barber shop. After some time I began to study and learn the technique of my son’s barber. My intentions were to be able to maintain his haircut between trips to the barbershop, that’s exactly what I did. This sparked my interest in barbering. This garnered many compliments, which along with the support of friends and family, influenced me to make the decision to enroll into cosmetology school at Hair Design Beauty College. I excelled in mastering the art of barbering while attending cosmetology school, and even forged ahead as the school’s very first class president. Upon graduation, I became a barber at King Cutz beauty and barber shop in 1997.
Today, over 25 years later, I have established many roots within my community. Not only have I become a master barber in the field, but I’m also a very successful businesswoman, a wife, and mother of two beautiful children. I also dedicate time to serve the special needs community on behalf of my son. Balancing such a full life is a major priority to me in order to maintain a positive, continual move forward.
As a master barber, I have been dubbed “QUEENCUTZ” by my clients. Well known for my attention to detail, innovative artwork, and creativity, I strive to offer complete satisfaction to new and returning clients. Although I service men, women and children I’ve gained a lot of
As a businesswoman, I am the CEO of Queencutz Unlimited LLC. And the owner of Queencutz Corner, where I am currently based. I have hosted many workshops showcasing my skills. I also offer classes to outgoing barber students, offering my knowledge on what it takes to be successful in the field after graduating from barber school. My passion for helping students succeed have become the foundation of my future goals to open my very own salon studios and establish a multilevel barber on line course. I have also created a high quality product line The Queencutz Haircare System which consist of ten products and growing. My product line promotes and helps to maintain healthy hair, in addition to developing and producing the Queencutz Hair Sponge a grooming tool. With a “SKY IS THE LIMIT” attitude, I “QUEENCUTZ” will always do what is necessary to remain relevant, and continue to break through glass ceilings.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Consistency with your skills. Great personality for customer service, and a entrepreneurial mindset for success. To have an entrepreneurial mindset, you have to be willing to grow, be open for change with time, and continue to educate yourself about your business. It is very important to have these three things in order to be successful. Skills, great customer service, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
In this industry, it can occasionally feel overwhelming. You must set aside time to refocus. To be satisfied in this profession, you must take care of your physical and emotional health. A great way to regroup would be once or twice a year take a vacation. Put the focus on yourself and your family
