Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keilah Jude. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Keilah , so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I firmly believe in working hard and then taking breaks. When I was doing my undergrad, I never took breaks (yikes, right?). I was always going, going, and going! It led to exhaustion.
It is really important for your health and mental health that you take days off or make boundaries for when you will and will not take work calls/emails. If you take breaks, studies show that your effectiveness and productivity actually increases! I encourage everybody to utilize taking breaks and resting so that they can be their personal best. It transformed my life in the best way possible once I learned how to work hard, and then take breaks.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Keilah Jude and I work as an actress and model. I’ve done lots of commercial work for companies like ALDI, McAlister’s, Office Max, Speedway, Orange Theory, Five Below, and more! I’ve also done feature films that appear on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. Besides this, I regularly work as a model.
In my spare time, I go to school as a grad student, and enjoy time with my family and my rascal dog Daisy.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think one of the most important skills to develop for acting is resilience. This industry is cut throat and competitive! There is a lot of rejection however I am so grateful for the open doors! And honestly you can’t take it personally. You may be too tall, too short, not the right fit, etc and it has nothing to do with your skills or abilities. I think developing resilience is important to overcome rejection (which is inevitable at times).
I would encourage others in any creative field or anybody who is trying to achieve their goals, to practice resilience and never give up. I would encourage them that they can do it, and the people who achieve success are the ones who refused to quit no matter what. Every successful person has faced rejection and failure, however they refused to give up and eventually succeeded.
I also think we should always be students and be teachable. The day that we stop learning is the day that we stop growing. So we all ought to continuously keep training and learning, because it will only make us better.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I like to pray, take a brief break, or listen to music and let my mind rest.
Sometimes things get stressful, and that is OK! But I think we have to find what helps us manage our stress so we can navigate it well and get through it. I strongly believe in taking breaks and if my day won’t allow me to have a long break, then sometimes a 10-minute break is exactly what I need to allow my mind to rest so I can get right back to my work and do it well.
While we can’t always get a break in our busy schedules, there usually is some wiggle room to have a lunch break or to take a brief breather. This can be very helpful to reduce stress, gain clarity in thinking, and help us to compose ourselves. I used to be a teacher and my boss taught us this. She said if we got to the point of extreme stress, then we could call somebody in and take a very brief break. This was very wise, so that teachers never would get to the point of breaking. I am so thankful to my former boss for teaching us the power of brief breaks.
