Meet Keisha LaRoux

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keisha LaRoux. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keisha below.

Keisha, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I don’t think anyone suddenly overcomes imposter syndrome; it’s a constant struggle for self-validation. I think the best way to overcome it is by not comparing your journey to anyone else’s and remembering that whatever you decide to create is a valid form of expression.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Born and raised in the DMV I have always had an affinity for arts and social issues. Early experiments with film photography sparked my photography interest; but I rarely saw the images that represented my authentic experiences. Photos By Roux was founded in 2020 as I had been re-inspired to document, showcase, and appreciate the struggles and successes of those who are continuously oppressed in order to raise awareness and awe of their unique beauty. The purpose of my photography is to showcase the beauty behind Black people’s genuine experiences, act as an outlet for my rage, and protest against an establishment that is constantly attacking those who look like me and those I love. The main focuses of my photography are social realism, which I use to document the current mood of the people and surreal photography which I use to express my current frame of mind creatively.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The greatest skills that impacted my creative journey were:

#1 A willingness to ask for help/advice.
#2 A desire to create something new and meaningful
#3 The desire to impact my community through art

The best advice I could give to improve these skills would be to explore different methods and to not be afraid to network with peers in your field.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The best advice I could give when you’re feeling overwhelmed is to a take step back and take a breath; then complete one task at a time and ask for help if needed.
