We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keith Alexander Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keith Alexander, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I think it depends on what kind of purpose we are talking about.
For my personal life, my family and loved ones gives me purpose to strive to be the best person I can be everyday.
For work, I think it just comes from wanting to do the best I can with the opportunities I was given. I find great enjoyment in creating illustrations that is intriguing for people to look at and solve, I love that interaction I can have with other people through my illustrations. I would say that gives me purpose for my work.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an illustrator. My work mostly fit within the editorial and advertising market.
I love creating work that are interesting to look at. I like to create mini-riddles within a simpler visual approach. I would be happy to know that someone can look at my work and stop to think “oh wow, that was really interesting.”
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the most impactful qualities would be dedication, good work ethics, and to be adventurous.
With illustration, the dedication in improving both my technically skill and conceptual approach is most impactful in honing my skill application in my job. I don’t believe in creativity on demand, at least for myself. I like to keep up with my daily drawing practice as well as ideation sketches to make sure I am prepared always.
Practicing good work ethics is equally as important as the quality of my work. I believe that the way I carry myself professionally has an impact on a client’s confidence in me. Making sure my communication is timely, clear and concise. As well as presenting my work in a neat and orderly fashion. I believe that all these qualities are as important as the work itself.
Being adventurous for me means to always be trying out new idea. There are many ways to create visual solutions, I try to always find new ways in how I approach my illustration conceptually. It is important to always to keep your mind sharp and not just rely on one or two good solves.
If I were to give anyone advice it would be to always be willing to learn and always be willing to improve, because there is always something we can do better.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I find that when I am overwhelmed I like to take a step back and either write out a list or have a mental list to what needs to be done, sort of like a to do list. I would get the easiest things out of the way first, then I can focus on the bigger task I need to tackle.
