We recently connected with Kellen Lee and have shared our conversation below.
Hi KELLEN, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
MY CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM COME FROM MY MOTHER. FROM AS FAR BACK AS I CAN REMEMBER, SHE’S ALWAYS TOLD ME HOW BEAUTIFUL I AM, HOW BEAUTIFUL MY SKIN TONE IS, HOW TALENTED I AM, HOW I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT TO IF I SET MY MIND TO IT, AND HOW PHENOMENAL I AM. I GREW UP HAVING HER POUR LIFE INTO ME AND BOOST MY SELF-ETEEM, NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAID. AND I’VE HEARD A LOT REGARDING BEING “PRETTY FOR MY SKIN COLOR”, WHICH IS NOT A COMPLIMENT I’VE REALIZED BECAUSE I’M BEAUTIFUL NO MATTER WHAT. MY GRANDFATHER IS ANOTHER REASON I’M CONFIDENT BECAUSE HE TOLD ME I WAS THE PRETTIEST GIRL IN THE WHOLE WORLD. HE’S 91 YEAR S OLD AND STILL TELLS ME THAT EVERY DAY. HE ALSO BELIEVES IN ME AND TOLD ME DESPITE BEING.A WOMAN, I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT IN THIS WORLD. KNOWING HOW HE GREW UP, AND THE TIMES WHERE WOMEN WERE NOT EQUAL, I LOVE KNOWING HE STILL BELIEVES IN ME. I’M AMAING BECAUSE OF THE LOVE AND SUPPORT OF MY FAMILY.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Kellen and I’m an actor, assistant director (hopefully director one day), writer and producer. The thing I love most about what I do is being creative and having a space to bring another persons story to life. As an actor, you get to play with a range of emotions because you are giving a voice to someone else. The feelings you have and what you bring to the character tells their journey to the audience and brings them along for the ride. Acting, actually anything that involves being creative takes a lot of hard work, patience, studying, and an imagination beyond what your every day life is. My favorite thing about being an actor or even a visionary is being able to release emotions and truly becoming someone else. As a writer, having my thoughts and what I see in my head come to life in words is one of the best experiences. I’ve also written short plays and watching the impact on people was an experience that I will never forget. Doing what I love and what I’m most passionate about is the greatest gift.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
THIS IS A HARD ONE. I THINK THE MOST IMPACTFUL THINGS FOR ME WAS MY WILLINGNESS TO LEARN AND BE COACHABLE. THE PASSION I HAVE FOR WHAT I LOVE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BECAUSE I NEVER TIRE OF IT. I ALWAYS KEEP GOING. AND BELIEF IN MYSELF BECAUSE IF I DON’T BELIEVE IN ME, WHO WILL. THE ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE ELSE, DO IT SCARED. EVERYTHING YOU WANT IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF FEAR. AND THE OTHER WOULD BE, THE ELEVATOR TO SUCESS IS BROKEN, TAKE THE STAIRS. A LOT OF THINGS WILL NOT COME EASY, SO YOU’LL HAVE TO DO THE WORK TO GET WHAT YOU WANT. IT MAY BE HARD WORK, BUT IT WILL BE VERY REWARDING, BOTH OF THOSE QUOTES ARE ON MY PHONE SCREENSAVER.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
At the time I began this answer, I was nervous about what to say. I was nervous about revealing things about myself and personal life because I usually stay private. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say, but then I realized, everyone experiences loss of some kind. Sometimes you experience loss of self, loss of a loved one, a friend, loss of love or heart break in general and it’s challenging to navigate through. Currently, I’m experiencing a loss and it’s a challenge to navigate through those feelings. My usual way of dealing with sad or heart breaking feelings is to shut them down and take care of everything and everyone, which is what I have been doing. For some, not allowing yourself feel, helps work through the feelings as they come but it’s being careful because holding on to long, feelings will release all at once. I am turning to work and acting to sort through my emotions and tears. Creative outlets for me work when I lean in and go for it; no holding back. My loss is very new, but focusing on things I love to do is helpful.
