We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KELLIE TAYLOR a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi KELLIE, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Yikes. I was adopted at 2 weeks by older parents who never tried to hide the fact that I was. So, one of my first memories was Kindergarten, telling adults “my fun fact about myself” and realizing that the adults were surprised that this 5-year-old with a speech impediment was nonchalantly explaining adoption.
I think that was one of those character-building catalyst moments for sure.
If nothing else, it’s definitely where the thick skin set in!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a photographer, specializing in candid, journalistic weddings. I’ve always thought that life happens in the details…like, when someone replies to your text instantly or when you finally find the comfortable sleeping position. It’s going to bed knowing that you can sleep in as long as you want, finding money in a pocket, a compliment from a stranger…that moment when the laugh is funnier than the joke, or you see your food coming in a restaurant…the big picture is the goal…but, life happens in the details.
I love being there during the most magical moments in someone’s life. I love telling the story for them.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Learn from those around you. I often found myself around others who wanted to gatekeep and it does not take me long to distance myself from those people. I want to be someone to be seen as a resource, not a wall.
See opportunities to learn and grow. Not every opportunity will pay you in cash. Especially in the beginning. You have to find the reason the opportunity presented itself. Is it education, networking, there are so many methods of compensation other than cash.
Be ready to push past the hard parts and do what it takes. EVERYONE faces a make it or break it moment. Make it.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Sooooooo, I was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. I changed jobs from a bakery manager to a desk job so my body could live a plusher existence. Did the surgery, the treatments, the scans, the meds; but here I am in my decade later still diagnosed with cancer. During my last decade there were SO many changes. NONE I regret because every single change was made with the intention of my serotonin level.
