We were lucky to catch up with Kellina Powell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kellina , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Many of us reach a point in life where we ask ourselves, “How do I find my purpose?” It’s not always an easy question to answer, and for many, including myself, it’s not something that comes overnight. Purpose isn’t something you find by accident—it’s something you uncover by looking inward, reflecting on your journey, and listening to what lights you up. Often, your greatest challenges reveal your deepest calling. For me, losing my hearing at the age of four wasn’t the end—it became the foundation of my purpose: to be a voice for others in a world that often forgets to listen. Purpose reveals itself in the things that bring you joy, even when they’re hard, and in the moments when you feel most connected to others. It’s not just about what you do—it’s about who you’re doing it for. The people you serve, the lives you impact, and the energy you give are all clues. Sometimes, the only way to figure it out is to take action, try new things, and allow yourself to learn through both success and failure. Be patient with yourself, but stay curious. You are constantly evolving, and your purpose might, too. Just remember—your purpose isn’t something you need to chase. It’s already within you, waiting to be noticed, nurtured, and shared with the world.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hi everyone! My name is Kellina Powell, and I’m a life coach, mental health advocate, 4X best-selling author, and founder of Kellina’s Empowerment Inc.I help young adults with disabilities—especially in the Deaf community—discover their strengths, build confidence, and take charge of their mental health and future.
What makes my work so exciting is that it’s rooted in lived experience. I lost 100% of my hearing at the age of four, and growing up, I rarely saw people who looked or communicated like me in leadership roles. Today, I get to be the representation I once needed—and that’s powerful. I combine coaching, speaking, and storytelling to educate others about Deaf culture, disability inclusion, and mental wellness. Whether it’s through workshops, my books, or my social media content, everything I create is designed to inspire action, empathy, and empowerment.
Right now, I’m expanding my brand with a new line of empowering merch, the creation of camps and day programs for the Deaf and hard of hearing community, and an exciting new book that highlights successful entrepreneurs with disabilities. I’m also offering corporate workshops focused on inclusive leadership, accessibility, and mental health in the workplace. In addition, I’ve recently started my own investment property real estate initiative to provide safe, inclusive housing for individuals with disabilities who have been on waitlists for far too long.
My message is simple: You are not limited by your challenges—you are defined by how you rise above them.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, self-awareness, and communication. Resilience helped me push through the challenges of being a Deaf Black woman navigating spaces that often weren’t designed with people like me in mind. Instead of giving up, I learned to see rejection and setbacks as opportunities to grow stronger. Self-awareness allowed me to stay grounded in who I am—understanding my values, strengths, and vision helped me move forward with confidence, even when the path wasn’t clear. Communication became my superpower, even in a world that doesn’t always speak my language. Whether through writing, sign language, or public speaking, I’ve found ways to connect, advocate, and share my story in ways that inspire and educate others. For anyone early in their journey, I encourage you to build resilience by embracing challenges, deepen self-awareness by reflecting often, and improve communication by owning your voice and using it in whatever form feels most authentic to you. Growth takes time, but every step forward matters.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I’m always open to partnering and collaborating with individuals and organizations who are passionate about disability inclusion, mental health advocacy, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment. I’m especially looking to connect with schools, event organizers, corporate leaders, real estate developers, and fellow creatives who want to make a real impact—whether that’s through speaking engagements, inclusive programming, accessible housing projects, or community-led events. If you’re someone who believes in creating a more inclusive and empowered world, I’d love to connect.
