Meet Kelly De Leon

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly De Leon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kelly, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

It took me a really long time to be able to believe in myself. In an industry like this one where we’re supposed to help make others feel beautiful

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a Latina hairstylist based out in Raleigh , Nc . I am a small salon owner who focuses in providing a relaxing and luxurious experience to my clients. My main focus as a hairstylist is providing an exceptional service and for my clients, anyone who sits in my chair to feel their best and love their hair.
As of right now I am working on a few new exciting projects that will be broadcasted in my social media so definitely stay tuned !!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

If I had to choose three, the first quality is confidence. I was not confident in the beginning of my career and it impacted a lot of my work. It can be really scary anytime you’re starting something new but always believe in yourself and be confident in your skills.
Ask questions and ask for help. There’s nothing wrong with needing help in this industry especially since there’s always something new. I was very fortunate I came across some very helpful people early on in my career who helped me with basic stuff or just someone who I could talk to. If you’re still in school my advice is to soak up all the information and ask questions along the way, if you’re already working in a salon then consider taking an apprenticeship or become someone’s assistant.
Lastly, never stop learning. Continuing education has been very impactful in my career. I love learning new techniques and learning from other artist who have been in this industry longer than I have. I am three years in and I still have so much to learn. Continuing education classes can be pricey but there’s so many resources out there that don’t cost a thing. Never stop learning and learn from others who have been in the game for longer. It can help you improve your skills and time so much.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My mom has definitely been my biggest support and reasoning for my success. She has helped me gain confidence in myself and in my work. Anytime a problem has come up at the salon she’s the first one to help. She has taught me to be the hard working person I am today.
