We recently connected with Kelly Fung and have shared our conversation below.
Kelly, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from the way I grew up. Most people see me as this strong, outspoken person, but growing up, I was not that way. With many years of therapy and my amazing support system I have become this way. I wouldn’t say I grew up horribly; it was just different. I learned from a very young age how to hide things from people and go with whatever is thrown my way no matter what. After meeting my husband in 2002, he taught me how to be strong and stand up for myself. It has taken me many years and cutting people out of my life to realize I am stronger than I ever was. I am a people pleaser, but I have learned I cannot be that way anymore. I need to stand up for myself, my husband, and my three amazing kids!
Throughout this journey of self-discovery, I’ve come to appreciate the power of setting boundaries and prioritizing my own well-being. It wasn’t easy to break free from the habit of always putting others first, but each step towards asserting myself has been empowering. Now, I understand that true strength comes from within, from honoring my own needs while still being compassionate towards others. This realization has not only transformed my relationships but also my sense of self-worth.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Once my twins started school, I decided it was time to return to work. I wanted a job that offered flexibility to attend all their school activities. In 2021, I became a Realtor. Having previously sold my house in Miami and purchased my home in Weston, I felt drawn to this profession.
I am not the type to pressure anyone; I’ll happily show you as many properties as you desire. Whether it’s advising on a good buy or not, I work with a diverse range of clients. One day, I might be showing affordable homes to one customer, and the next, luxury estates to another. Regardless of budget, I’m dedicated to helping clients find their dream home. I pride myself on partnering with top professionals in the industry to ensure my clients have the best possible experience.
What sets me apart as a Realtor is my commitment to giving back. I donate a portion of my commission to charity, with a focus on causes close to my heart: Dec My Room, American Cancer Society, or Sheridan House. I let my clients choose which organization they’d like to support, or I’m open to their preferred charity.
Beyond real estate, I am deeply involved in my children’s school community. As Vice President of Ways and Means on the PTA Board, I contribute my time and efforts to enriching school life when I’m not assisting clients or showing properties.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The advice I would give to someone looking to join real estate is to never give up. Success in this field requires patience with your customers and colleagues alike. Unfortunately, many individuals are solely focused on personal gain and may resort to unethical practices like stealing, cheating, and lying to advance themselves. It’s crucial not to adopt these behaviors if you aim to thrive.
Early in my career, I worked alongside an few other Realtors whom I initially thought highly of for their knowledge and skills. However, I quickly learned that appearances can be deceiving in this industry. Being assertive and willing to walk away from unethical situations is essential for maintaining your integrity and reputation.
Additionally, having in-depth knowledge of different neighborhoods and school districts is vital when working with clients. If you don’t have this information readily available, don’t hesitate to conduct thorough research to educate yourself. Clients trust Realtors who demonstrate a thorough understanding of the areas they are interested in.
To summarize, persistence, integrity, and continuous learning are key to succeeding in real estate. By prioritizing these principles, you’ll not only build a successful career but also earn the trust and respect of your clients and peers.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I have a few people I can always count on for advice: my husband Kenny and my three amazing kids. When I’m having a rough day or need guidance on how to handle something, I often find myself in Kenny’s office, having a conversation with him. He has a remarkable ability to stay level-headed in tough situations, which is something I greatly admire and rely on.
Another person I turn to is my Uncle Dan. When it comes to real estate, he’s the smartest person I know. Whether I have doubts about a deal or questions about a contract, I know I can call him and get a reliable answer. Uncle Dan has always emphasized the importance of trusting my instincts, and so far, following that advice has never let me down.
