We were lucky to catch up with Kelly Maryanski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
As a multi-hyphenate, I find my best method to avoid or overcome burnout when I feel it is approaching is to actively switch my focus and attention to a passion or hobby that is purely personal. I am not a huge tech savvy person and switching off my devices is INSANELY helpful to re-focus and reset my brain and intentions. Too much time on social media is sure to cause burnout as well.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I always get overwhelmed by this question so I am going to phone this answer in and provide two of my professional bios below, one as an illustrator, and one as a performer (this part may read like textbook):
As an illustrator and fashion sketch artist:
Kelly Maryanski is a Los Angeles based illustrator specializing in ink and watercolor and live fashion sketching. Her work was first published at the age of 11 in TOKYOPOP Magazine, Los Angeles, CA. In 2005, Kelly completed her first publication job when she was a junior in high school as a recurring illustrator at Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers. She holds a BFA cum laude from Denison University in Granville, Ohio where she specialized in large scale illustration and site-specific installations. She is intrigued with voyeurism, tactile objects, cuteness and kitsch, society’s fixation upon iconic figures, identity formation, and incorporating whimsy in each of her designs and into everyday life.
Kelly is inspired by the works of John Tenniel, Maira Kalman, Wes Anderson, Edith Head, and Miles White. And Audrey Hepburn. And movement.
Often, verity lies in details and sometimes these small things matter the most.
Kelly’s illustrations have been featured for the Art Institute of Chicago, Dainese, Harley Davidson, Hush Puppies, Lumen Optical, Simple Skincare, FLATS Chicago, Givenchy, Create & Cultivate, Goldman Sachs, Luxury Garage Sale, Hermès, Saks Fifth Avenue, Wansas Tequila, West Elm, Westfield Shopping Centers, private concept art and character design, D&D character designs, and multiple exhibitions and activations across the USA.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Intuition: Trust yourself, know what brings you joy and follow the path that will lead you there. Nothing worth having is easy. 2. Flexibility: Have multiple options and paths ready to fall back on. This does not necessarily mean a lesser or worse option. It is great to have multiple options of the same caliber.
3. Networking and being kind : you never know who you are going to meet, and friends are worth the world. Be kind to everyone. You never know what kind of day someone else is having and what type of impression you will make.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I thrive in collaborating with other movement and circus artists. I think that circus in America (and especially on the west coast) is not valued in the same way as it is in Europe and abroad and I would love for more collaboration and collectives to arise. If any circus artists, aerialists, and /or dancers in Southern California are looking to collaborate please reach out! We are naturally gregarious and connection and idea sharing can spark genius.
