We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelsey Bates a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelsey, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I don’t think I’ll ever actually overcome imposter syndrome, but staying focused on our business and not worrying about what other people are doing really helps drown out all of the other noise!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My husband and I started Little Babes of Charleston when we noticed the need of White Bounce houses in our area, specifically for our daughters first birthday party. Now almost two years later, we primarily focus on our luxury soft play and ball pit rentals, being the first (and for now, the only) provider in the Charleston area! We are also looking for more products to add to our lineup of luxury kids party rentals, so be sure to keep an eye out for what’s to come!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think one of the most important things we did was to focus on our own business, and not worry about what others in our area (or even the industry) were doing! We stayed in our lane, didn’t copy what our local competitors were doing, and I think the people noticed, and we grew organically!
If you’re new to this industry, just know it’s more work than it seems, but also worth it! It’s such a fun industry to be a part of!
I also recommend getting to know your direct “competition” in the area, and form a relationship with them! You never know when you may need their help or advice!
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Our ideal client is a mom (or dad) who is looking to throw an over-the-top birthday party for their baby/toddler! Someone who is excited about our aesthetically pleasing rentals, and loves a good party theme!
