We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelsey Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelsey below.
Kelsey, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My mother instilled resilience in me at a young age. My two siblings and I were taught to be strong, work hard and be the change that we wanted to see in ourselves and the community. My mother tirelessly gave back in our community–through organizing school supplies drives, volunteering at the local high school and launching a much-needed food bank in a small nearby town.
My mother’s life was cut too short by leukemia. But, the experience of losing a parent far too young contributed to the resilience I have today–whether in my career, making the change I want to see in my city or with my numerous side passion projects. I have a strong desire to help shape the community in which I live and work for the better, and that is directly attributed to my mother.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Kelsey Jones. I am a self-proclaimed epicurean, book lover, wife and mother to two felines. I am a corporate communicator by day, but recently dove into the world of freelance. I launched Keeping Up, a nod to my last name, to support clients with event ideation, speaking engagements and overall strategic communications. Combining my passion for food and community with communications, my client roster ranges from individual changemakers to local food-forward establishments.
Outside of work, I founded Silent Book Club Indy. We are a chapter of the larger Silent Book Club organization and meet monthly over drinks to read independently and socialize. There is no book assignment–attendees bring whatever they are currently reading. I am proud to say we have grown from a mere four attendees to more than two hundred readers a month in the last two years!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, relationship building, strategic communications and the desire for lifelong learning have been critical on my journey. I know networking events can be awkward, but you never know who you will meet that can propel your career or can connect you with someone who can. There are fantastic networking groups in every city. Do your research and find one that is a good fit for your interests and goals. In addition, I highly recommend volunteering with an organization important to you. Not only will you be giving back, but it’s a great opportunity to meet new people.
Strong communication skills are essential in every role–I just so happen to do it as my day job. For early-in-career folks, I suggest actively reading, writing and practicing verbal communications. Does public speaking make you sick to your stomach? Find a Toastmasters Club in your area!
Always be learning is a life motto of mine. I’ve made the leap to return to graduate school twice now out of curiosity and the desire to redirect my career. However, you don’t have to go back to school or get a master’s degree to continue your education. Look for single courses at your community college, local events on topics of interest or seek a mentor!
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal freelance communications and PR client understands that they have a story to tell and need help telling it. Specifically, helping small to mid-sized food and beverage companies is a passion of mine. I am currently enrolled in the Food Studies Graduate Certificate Program at Boston University with a focus in communications. Let me help tell your unique story!
