We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelsey Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kelsey , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience, in my experience, is shaped by a variety of factors, but for me, it has always stemmed from being the “underdog.” I didn’t have the easiest childhood, and my support system has often been unstable, forcing me to climb my way to the top. Through these challenges, I’ve learned that my greatest strength lies in my ability to handle whatever life throws my way. I also believe in the importance of continuous self-improvement, staying humble, focused, and motivated. My only competition is with who I was yesterday.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was born in a small town in Colorado but always had a dream of moving to the city. From a young age, I’ve been passionate about helping others, art, makeup, and animals. I’d spend hours playing dress-up, singing on my karaoke machine, and pretending my stuffed animals were my audience or clients. Now, in my 30s, I’m finally seeing my dreams come to life. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get here, but I wouldn’t change a single part of my journey.
I’m a full-time, single mom to a wonderful pre-teen daughter, and we share our home with a kitty and a dog. I’m also a licensed Esthetician, specializing in skincare, makeup, and waxing, and I recently earned my Peer Recovery Coach certification. Right now, I’m balancing both careers and have just moved into a shared suite for my beauty business.
My new role as a Peer Recovery Coach is everything I hoped for and more. I have the privilege of helping others navigate their sobriety and reach their goals—how amazing is that? With four years of sobriety under my belt, I’m excited about the next chapter of my life. There’s still work to do on my small business, but for now, you can find me on Instagram at @esthetics_by_kelsey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most significant aspects of my life are my sobriety, my daughter/ pets, and the journey of healing my inner child.
My advice? Be mindful in your decisions and take the time to think things through. Remember, “No” is a complete sentence. If you fall down, get back up—failure only happens when you quit. Most importantly, believe in yourself. It’s never too late to change or chase your dreams. It may be hard work, but the rewards are beyond worth it.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m eager to collaborate with like-minded individuals who share similar passions. Surrounding yourself with people who are where you want to be or who are doing what you aspire to do is crucial to success. It truly takes a village. I’m interested in getting more involved in podcasts, outreach work with youth, prison systems, and the homeless, as well as volunteering. I’d love to partner with others to donate gift certificates for my beauty services to support good causes.
In the near future, I’m planning to obtain my permanent makeup certification with a goal to help breast cancer survivors. I believe in using my skills to make a meaningful impact, and I’m excited about the possibilities ahead.
