Meet Kelsey Muse

We were lucky to catch up with Kelsey Muse recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kelsey, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

It’s a skill or trait that can be developed over time. For me, I was surrounded by music and performing arts at a young age. Although I was shy, I was also curious. I was homeschooled and I began studying music theory at 7yrs old, so early on I learned structure. Failures and wins. Tests made me nervous, but something about performing on stage felt naturally confident. My first piano teacher was strict but showed me fundamentals I use to create a song or stage presence. By starting early, it kickstarted my self esteem and helped me later on in my career. From middle school to high school, I would spend 3-5 hours a day practicing or studying in my room, over time adding to my music equipment, using the internet and rehearsing with others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My sound is urban pop/hiphop. My brand is about messages of hope and motivation to the misfits, muses & underdogs. I enjoy translating complicated ideas into music and art to express what we feel on the inside. I am currently in the studio, finishing songs to choose for future projects. Im focused on showcasing a more in depth look for the music and brand. The best way to see these updates will be on Instagram & YouTube.
Along with my own projects, I provide services for music features, songwriting, makeup & fashion styling.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Rehearse; Being able to practice your craft in your own space while drowning out distractions is extremely beneficial, learn how to master your own rehearsal. Listening; I had certain teachers in and out of life, by listening to their words, I was able to apply what I could for my own lane.
Lastly, being comfortable in your brand. Knowing your purpose and building something unique only you can do. Sometimes, I walked into an idea more than intentionally looking for it. Choosing to flow with the industry up and downs.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I jot down quotes or one-liners. I’m a thinker, I enjoy creating mood boards whether with fabric, music or reading to transmute the idea. Self care activities help a lot, for me being in nature, painting or working out.
