Meet Kelvin Louie

We were lucky to catch up with Kelvin Louie recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kelvin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Leveraging my unique perspective, I’ve held leadership roles since I started working at 18. My experience running a tea house taught me valuable communication and team management skills. Being transparent with both my team and customers facilitated a smooth transition into a leadership role in real estate. I focused on supporting my team with a balance of tough love, understanding that people learn faster when challenged.

I believe in mastering a skill myself before teaching it to others, preferring to troubleshoot issues before scaling solutions. My time at Apple reinforced my resilience and adaptability in the face of change. Even as real estate became more challenging post-NAR ruling, I adapted and found ways to overcome obstacles.

My commitment to continuous learning and mentorship drives me to seek guidance from mentors and to pass on that knowledge to my team. This dedication to learning and growth distinguishes me and contributes to my success.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

The most exciting aspect of my role is helping people create lasting memories by handing them the keys to their new home. When clients struggle to get approved or believe homeownership is out of reach, my creativity and strategic thinking come into play. I excel at finding innovative solutions to help individuals succeed in buying a home, even in challenging situations like high interest rates, poor credit, or financial readiness issues.

Clients often come to me after facing repeated rejections. I approach each situation with a strategic mindset, developing tailored ideas and solutions to overcome obstacles. My services are always available, but they typically begin when clients reach out to me, allowing us to build a relationship and work together toward their homeownership goals.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three key skills that have helped me excel in real estate are videography, leadership, and empathy. My college experience with digital graphics enabled me to create engaging video content for real estate. Leadership skills, developed through my experience as a boss, have allowed me to build and scale a successful team. Empathy is crucial for understanding clients’ situations and providing tailored options and opportunities for those struggling to achieve homeownership.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am always open to collaboration and eager to work with others. However, I’ve noticed that sometimes people judge others based on appearances before getting to know them, which can be a challenge in the competitive world of real estate. Success can sometimes lead to mixed reactions, with some people being more supportive when they see you succeed, and others only reaching out when they feel they need something. I noticed in real estate it’s very cut throat, and people feel some type of way when you hit success but they would be like buddy buddy if they would do better than you.

For me, true collaboration involves coming together to generate meaningful ideas that benefit people globally. If anyone is interested in collaborating, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram.
