Meet Kendall Ware

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kendall Ware a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kendall, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?
My entire career has been devoted to the field of education. I have experience teaching at various levels, including middle school, high school, and both undergraduate and graduate college levels. Additionally, I have served as the director of multiple student success programs.

However, my journey took an unexpected turn when, exactly one year into my role as the director of my last program, I was laid off. This decision puzzled me, as my performance reviews consistently praised my proficiency in my work. The situation became more complex when my initial supervisor left after just four months, and the subsequent supervisor tragically passed away in a car accident after eleven months.

I initially believed my position would remain secure, given the recent losses the organization had suffered. However, this assumption proved to be incorrect. The CEO briefly took on the role of my direct supervisor for three weeks before I was assigned to someone else. Two weeks into this new arrangement, my supervisor requested access to my program’s data, which only I possessed. She then scheduled a morning meeting to discuss the matter.

Upon arriving at the meeting, I was surprised to find the HR manager present. My supervisor expressed doubts about my leadership abilities, despite having known me for only two weeks. She accused me of betraying the company by not disclosing the plans of my staff members, five of whom were actively searching for new positions, and I had been assisting them in their job search.

My belief is that exceptional leaders foster leadership qualities in others, which is precisely what I was doing by helping my team members. Moreover, I firmly believe that I owe no explanations to my employer about the career decisions of my colleagues. I would never betray the trust of my coworkers.

Ultimately, I was offered a severance package and decided to move forward, convinced that this turn of events must have happened for a reason.

Here’s the reason: During my full-time employment, I was gradually working on a Black History mathematics textbook, a dream of mine that combined Black History with mathematical concepts. The layoff provided me with the time I needed to complete the first book in the series, titled “Solving for Freedom: An Algebra I Textbook that Illuminates Black History through Math Concepts.” This textbook is available in hardback, softback, and eBook formats on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/Solving-Freedom-Textbook-Illuminates-Concepts-ebook/dp/B0CGGL81C5/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=vaYOI&content-id=amzn1.sym.5f7e0a27-49c0-47d3-80b2-fd9271d863ca%3Aamzn1.symc.e5c80209-769f-4ade-a325-2eaec14b8e0e&pf_rd_p=5f7e0a27-49c0-47d3-80b2-fd9271d863ca&pf_rd_r=TXMQB28XEMVD0Z9JC58Y&pd_rd_wg=SPs7R&pd_rd_r=978dbfac-07d0-40df-8903-dcc865fb89b0&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_atf_m

Currently, I am in the process of writing textbooks for Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre Calculus, and Statistics. My goal is for schools to have the option to purchase the entire series, recognizing the benefits of this approach for all students. The Algebra I textbook aims to help students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through the incorporation of Black History into examples, formulas, and various written and visual aids. The textbook’s content is centered on Black History, encompassing physical features, information about significant historical figures, content organization and presentation, mathematical terminology, and exercises with illustrations. Each subdivision in the book is driven by key ideas, and key details are emphasized, mirroring the approach of typical history textbooks.

The incorporation of Black History into the chapters recognizes the importance of key people, places, and events as vital historical details. Vocabulary is also a crucial aspect of the chapters.

I am pleased to share that two local schools in St. Louis, MO, and one educational program in East St. Louis, IL, have already approved the use of my textbook as part of their curriculum. This is just the beginning of my journey, as my ultimate goal is to have my textbooks adopted by school districts across the United States and, eventually, worldwide. While the layoff initially seemed inexplicable, I now understand that it was a necessary step on my path to realizing this meaningful project.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that discernment, decision-making, and relationship-building are three interconnected aspects that played a significant role in shaping my life journey. Here is how I feel they can impact your life:

Discernment:

Discernment refers to the ability to perceive and understand things clearly, especially when it comes to making choices and judgments.
It involves introspection, self-awareness, and a deep understanding of your values, goals, and priorities.
Discernment helps you identify your passions, strengths, and areas where you want to grow or make a difference in the world.
It enables you to differentiate between what truly matters to you and what might be distractions or less meaningful pursuits.
Effective discernment guides you in setting a clear direction for your life journey and making choices aligned with your authentic self.
Decision-Making:

Decision-making is the process of choosing a course of action from among multiple options or alternatives.
The decisions you make can have both short-term and long-term consequences, which can significantly impact your life journey.
Your ability to make informed, thoughtful decisions is crucial in achieving your goals and realizing your dreams.
Good decision-making involves gathering relevant information, considering pros and cons, weighing the potential outcomes, and making choices that align with your discerned values and objectives.
Poor decisions can lead to setbacks and detours in your life journey, while wise decisions can pave the way for growth and success.
Relationship Building:

Relationships are a fundamental aspect of human life and can profoundly influence your life’s journey.
Building and maintaining meaningful relationships with family, friends, mentors, colleagues, and even acquaintances can provide support, guidance, and opportunities.
Positive relationships can offer emotional support during challenging times and can open doors to new experiences, collaborations, and personal growth.
Effective communication, empathy, and trust are essential skills in relationship building.
Nurturing healthy connections can create a network of people who can offer insights, share knowledge, and provide a sense of belonging and purpose.
The interplay of discernment, decision-making, and relationship building is dynamic. Discernment guides you in understanding your path, decision-making helps you choose the right steps along that path, and relationship building ensures you have a support system and resources to help you navigate your journey effectively.

Ultimately, the quality of your decisions and relationships can significantly impact the fulfillment, success, and satisfaction you derive from your life’s journey. Taking the time to reflect on your values, making thoughtful choices, and nurturing meaningful connections can contribute to a more purposeful and rewarding life.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
“The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne has played an important role in my development. Here are some ways in which the book has influenced my development:

Positive Thinking and Visualization: “The Secret” emphasizes the power of positive thinking and visualization. It encouraged me to focus on my desires and believe that I can achieve them. If you’ve embrace these concepts, it may help you develop a more optimistic mindset and a clearer vision of your goals.

Law of Attraction: The book introduces the idea of the Law of Attraction, which suggests that like attracts like. If you’ve incorporated this concept into your life like I have, it may influence your beliefs about the importance of your thoughts and emotions in attracting the experiences and outcomes you desire.

Goal Setting and Clarity: “The Secret” encouraged me to set clear goals and intentions. This practice can lead to improved goal-setting skills and greater clarity about what you want to achieve in various areas of your life.

Empowerment and Self-Belief: The book promotes the idea that individuals have the power to create their own reality. If you’ve embraced this concept, it may have contributed to your sense of empowerment and self-belief, leading to greater confidence and self-assuredness.

Mindfulness and Gratitude: “The Secret” highlights the importance of being mindful of the present moment and expressing gratitude for what you have. Practicing mindfulness and gratitude can enhance your overall well-being and contribute to personal development.

Inspiration and Motivation: For me, “The Secret” serves as a source of inspiration and motivation. It reminds me of my potential and encourages me to pursue my dreams and aspirations.

It’s worth noting that while “The Secret” has had a positive impact on many individuals, its ideas have also faced criticism and skepticism from some quarters. Your personal experience with the book and its impact on your development will depend on your receptiveness to its teachings and your ability to apply its principles to your life in a way that resonates with you.
