Meet Kendra Harris

We were lucky to catch up with Kendra Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kendra, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience is undoubtedly rooted in a rich tapestry of experiences and values that have shaped my journey. The commitment to thriving after a challenging marriage/divorce revealed an inner strength and determination to rise above adversity. I learned I had the ability to not only endure but also to grow from difficult situations.

As I stepped into the unwanted arena of working single mom, I’ve refused to succumb to the challenges. It takes tenacity and dedication to face those challenges with positivity, but the drive to provide for my son is a powerful motivator. It fuels my commitment to creating a better life for the both of us.

I’ve had many influencial mentors in the form of growth and development books. These inspirational leaders have taught me to embrace each lesson as an opportunity for self-improvement and that obstacles, diasappointment and setbacks guideposts and stepping stones toward success. Its a remarkable perspective that not only fosters resilience but also empowers me to navigate the twists and turns of life with grace and purpose.

Additionally, the support of a strong community is an invaluable asset. Facing your “worst case scenario” head-on with the reassurance of a supportive network allows you to confront challenges with courage. Recognizing that there is ample room for risk as you chase the rewards creates the space to push boundaries and explore new possibilities.

In essence, my resilience is a mosaic of personal strength, unwavering determination, a hunger for growth, and the support of community. I hope these qualities not only define my journey but also inspire those around me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Constantly Be Learning:
Embracing a mindset of continuous learning has been instrumental in my growth. Reading books and cultivating relationships with mentors who could impart valuable knowledge and insights opened doors to new perspectives and opportunities. My advice to those starting their journey is to prioritize learning. Seek out resources, both in written form and through meaningful connections, that challenge and expand your understanding. Never underestimate the power of knowledge in propelling you forward.

2. Positive Affirmation and Self-Belief:
The conscious decision to define who I wanted to be and affirming it daily has been a game-changer. Henry Ford’s wisdom, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right,” encapsulates the profound connection between our thoughts and our reality. My advice is to be intentional about the narrative you create for yourself. Choose positive affirmations that align with your goals and repeat them consistently. The transformative impact of self-belief cannot be overstated, shaping not only your mindset but also influencing your actions and outcomes.

3. Maintain Unwavering Integrity:
In a world where shortcuts may seem tempting, maintaining unwavering integrity has been a cornerstone of my journey. Opportunities to compromise on values may arise, but the long-term consequences of such decisions outweigh any short-term gains. My advice to those embarking on their journey is to prioritize integrity. Do the right thing even when it seems difficult or less rewarding in the moment. Your character is a precious asset, and being proud of your actions when you reflect at the end of each day is immensely gratifying.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“Fierce Conversations” by Susan Scott has been a transformative guide in my life, reshaping my perspective on difficult conversations and their profound impact on personal and professional growth. This book has instilled in me the understanding that these challenging dialogues are not to be avoided but embraced as opportunities for growth, productivity, and relationship-building.

One significant lesson I’ve gleaned from the book is the realization that difficult conversations are not inherently detrimental. In fact, they are often the crucible where meaningful change and progress are forged. By reframing my mindset to see these discussions as beneficial rather than burdensome, I’ve been able to approach them with a newfound sense of purpose and openness.

Moreover, “Fierce Conversations” has empowered me to gain control over my emotions during challenging discussions. The book emphasizes the importance of staying present in the conversation, listening actively, and responding thoughtfully rather than reacting emotionally. This shift has allowed me to navigate difficult topics with a clearer head, fostering understanding and preventing unnecessary escalation.

Finally, “Fierce Conversations” emphasizes the importance of trusting and obeying your instincts during discussions. This principle has taught me to pay attention to my gut feelings and intuition, guiding me in making decisions that align with my values and goals. By listening to my instincts, I’ve been able to navigate conversations authentically and make choices that resonate with my true self.
