We recently connected with Kendra Lewis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I’ve always know that my life has purpose, but up until a few years ago I didn’t know what it was. Finding my purpose has been a process that’s included anchoring my identity in Christ, knowing my worth in Christ, prayer, and allowing God to heal me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Several years ago, I heard Bishop T.D. Jakes say that your passion will lead you to your purpose. Over the years I’ve developed a burning desire to live out my pursose and in 2020 as I prayed and fasted for God to uncover my purpose, that statement stayed on repeat in my head. I finally realized that I’ve always had a love for helping others and a passion for encouraging and empowering women and girls. And in that moment, I also realized that I was never that far from walking in my purpose; I just had to be still and allow God to speak to me in order to know just what it was. .
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an Empowerment Coach who is passionate about helping women and girls become the best version of themselves so that they feel free to unapologetically live the life that God has purposed just for them. My business, K. Lewis Coaching & Mentoring, was birthed out of a place of victory. As I celebrated my freedom from the bondage of fear, self-doubt, rejection, toxic relationships, and the words of the naysayers that I had allowed to keep me from the destiny that was rightfully mine, my heart broke for the women who still remain stuck in the place where I once was. I am now dedicated to helping women and girls grow in all aspects of their lives by breaking free from the obstacles and strongholds that hold them back. Through K. Lewis Coaching & Mentoring, I offer classes and workshops that focus on spiritual growth and development, healing from brokenness, breaking away from strongholds, and more. I currently offer mentorship as a part of the Breaking Free class, which focuses on deliverance and healing. Within the next few months, I plan to open enrollment for my group coaching program.
The most exciting and fulfilling aspect of coaching and mentoring is witnessing the women and girls that I’ve had the priviledge to work with evolve into who they’ve always wanted to become, but just didn’t know how. I find joy in celebrating milestones with them and hearing their testimonies of overcoming life’s many challenges. I love sharing in those meaningful moments of success. I love being proud of them!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the main qualities that has been most impactful on my journey is empathy. Being able to identify and share the feelings of the women and girls around me is important in order for me to understand where they’ve been, where they currently are, and where they desire to go. Empathy allows me to build trust with the clients that I work with and it helps to foster an einvironment for connection, personal growh, learning, and collaboration. For those who are early in their journey, I encourage them to truly understand what being empathetic means and then put in the work to develop this quality. A couple of key elements that are important here are examining your own biasis and considering what it’s like to walk in the shoes of others which may give you a better perspective on why they may struggle with walking in their purpose.
A skill that has been most impactful on my journey is communication. You cannot be a successful coach or mentor if you lack the ability to effectively communicate. As a coach or mentor, you must be able to communicate your qualifications, what you’ve struggled with and what you’ve accomplised in life, and most importantly your plan and strategy for helping your client. When it comes to your client, you must be able to communicate what you see in them (good or bad), goals, expectations, constructive criticism, and positive feedback. Those who are new on their journey and may struggle with their commuication skills, my advice to them is to dedicate time and energy to improving upon that skill. Some helpful things to do are find classes that focus on strengthening that skill, read books devoted to the topic of communication or sit down with someone who they feel is a good communicator and ask them for helpful tips.
One area of knowledge that has been the most important and impactful on this journey is the area of coaching. When the thought of becoming a life coach entered my mind, I started to research more about it and what I needed to do to develop in that area. I enrolled in a program for certification and then I put in the work, which allowed me to gain the knowledge and skills that I needed to become the coach I desired to be. One important thing to remember is that learning, growing, and developing as a coach continues well beyond the classess and certification, you must continue to seek out knowledge and wisdom in order to better develop your craft.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is a woman who feels stuck in their path to discovering their purpose and/or developing their true identity in Christ after experiencing brokenness. A woman who desires to rebuild thier life after the healing process would also be ideal. This woman may be rebuilding after a divorce, overcoming depression, abuse, addiction, grief, etc. I am also looking for a woman with a desire to grow more spiritually and is willing to approach every area of struggle with faith-based teaching.
I am also looking to work with teen girls ages 13 to 18, focusing on affirmations, goal setting and empowerment. K. Lewis Coaching & Mentoring works with teen girls in group settings where they can feel free to express themselves to other peers, receive peer support, and develop team building and leadership skills. Programs offered to teen girls also address issues with self-esteem, self-worth, conlict resolution, negative thought patterns, healthy coping skills, and more.
