We recently connected with Kendra and have shared our conversation below.
Kendra, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I grew up very humble with a single mom who not only raised myself and my brother but was also head of household for her mom, sister and nieces and nephews. The household itself was also a pretty toxic environment where some members fought through alcoholism and a plethora of unhealthy habits. My mom taught me to be very resilient through her actions, never giving up and facing life through any and every challenge. In my 20’s, I also experienced many life hurdles such as death of loved ones, trying to overturn inhibited bad habits and the dooming pandemic. My resilience comes from an innocence of hope that life could be worse and no matter what I know it WILL get better, because it can’t stay “bad”.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been building a social media presence straight out of college in 2015. I create a variety of content that includes fashion inspiration, makeup tutorials and daily life vlogs. It is always exciting because it’s a field of endless opportunities to connect with brands, other creatives and be in spaces little me only ever dreamed of.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were consistency, drive and the need to succeed. The best advice I have is to remain teachable, know that you can learn from anyone and always grow. Be willing to learn whatever is needed to succeed at what you enjoy doing, stay consistent and most importantly disciplined!
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I will always recommend The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book has changed my outlook on life with people, and my personal challenges. It made me realized that there are core beliefs that can be modified to be of service to you at any point in your life.
