We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenna Porter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenna below.
Kenna, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
This is probably a never-ending battle. I would say I haven’t fully overcome imposter syndrome, however I have learned to be proud of how far I have come. I really struggle with comparing my work to other photographers, which sometimes leads me to feeling inadequate in the photography industry. Lately though, I have learned to love my work and just be proud that I have made it to this point. Young Kenna would not believe she could achieve all that she has thus far.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Luxury Wedding Photographer. I spend my time photographing people in their happiest life moments. I put an emphasis on the candid and free formed moments. I love capturing the little details and moments that most people would overlook on a wedding day.
I am currently shifting my brand to focus more on luxury and modern wedding affairs. My goal is to create a portfolio filled with elegant photographs and couples.
I do also offer discounts for couples looking to get married at my “dream” wedding venues. I have a list of places I have always wanted to photograph (both domestic and international) and when a couple of mine books at one of these said venues and chooses me to photograph, I give them a small percentage of their package off! It’s a win for both parties!
I feel very excited as my brand expands and changes. I will be photographing the most weddings I ever have this year, along with my first international wedding. God has been so good to me and my business this year, and its only January.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities I believe to be most impactful for me have been
1) Humility- You can’t get anywhere in life if you’re arrogant. Being humble, excepting help, and taking constructive criticism are all crucial elements of having success.
2) Professionalism- You cannot run a business if you are unprofessional. Being prepared, well-spoken, and organized are all qualities of being professional I find extremely impactful when making an impression on a potential client.
3) Joy- Your clients feed off of your energy. As a photographer, your job is to capture joy and happy moments. If you’re unhappy, your clients aren’t happy. When you are full of joy, that projects out into the world. The energy you put out is also, what I believe you receive in return. My goal is to always radiate the Joy of the Lord to my future and current clients.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me, was love me. My parents have loved me unconditionally since the day I was born. I wasn’t always the best or most respectful child. It took a long time for me to mature and grow. Despite all I put my parents through throughout the years, they never stopped believing in me and loving me.
My success is their success. They have raised me to be the woman I am today. They have influenced me, taught me, encouraged me… They have supported me and my business from the very beginning, and continue to as my business grows and succeeds. I owe a lot of my success to them. Their love is probably more impactful than they realize.
