Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kenneth Simpson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kenneth, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
When comes to my resilience I think it comes from my thought process that things will be better the next day or that these bad times will pass. This thought process has helped me get through some tough times. I think it also comes from just trying to be positive when everything around you looks dark.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Kenneth Simpson and I’m a local filmmaker within the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti and Metro Detroit area. I have a photography and video production service going by the name of Kino Ken. I’ve been working in video production since 2018 and since then I’ve worked on four feature films, documentaries, commercials, and live music events. Since then I’ve met tons of amazing and talented individuals from all walks of life. For me, my passion for film began when I was 10 but my mom would argue that I was obsessed with movies at an even younger age claiming my first sentence was “And Now our Feature Presentation.” due to all the VHS tapes I watched growing up. That fascination would be constant for me because I would spend most of my weekends going to Blockbuster renting movies and watching a new one every weekend either from there or with my Dad as a Sunday tradition. With that being said I’m happy to say that my passion and fascination for filmmaking have not died after all these years. Movies have always been an art form that has captured my heart I love the stories that media can produce and the emotions it brings with them. I can’t think of another form of art besides music that can move people on an emotional level. That’s always been something I’ve gravitated to and having the opportunity to create something within the realm of filmmaking that affects people on an emotional would be a dream.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey so far I’ve noticed that three aspects that have impacted me the most have to be my ability to want to learn. When you’re going on sets you’re being introduced to tons of new information, techniques, and technology. All this new information can be intimidating and a person could feel like they don’t belong or feel like they have to fake till they make it. I’ve been in there before but the thing that has worked best for me is the passion to learn how things work. I feel if you go in with that mentality people pick up on it and they really appreciate your enthusiasm and curiosity for what they do.
The other quality that has helped me during my journey has been the aspect of being a team player. This skill developed for me during my childhood through sports. I am fortunate enough to have coaches who instilled that lesson in me at a young age. Those lessons carried over to my film career because you start to realize that everyone that you’re working with all want the same thing. To make something great, if you have that mindset and you present yourself that allows you to be of service you can do some amazing things with people.
The last quality that helped me is my creative perspective. I feel that everyone has a certain viewpoint on life that allows their creativity to shine through. For me, it is how to view shoots and how to present them. That aspect of filmmaking always felt like a new puzzle that always piqued my interest in solving it. I feel that it is very important to be creative because your ideas can be the next game-changer in whatever you’re doing.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking to collaborate with people, my favorite thing for me lately has been discovering is meeting new passionate people who share the same interests as me, but I’m always open to new people regardless of their interests. Currently, I’m looking to collaborate on more feature or short films or documentaries, so please email me if you’re looking for more people to help with projects. I’m excited about what we could create with each other.
