Meet Kenneth Thrower

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kenneth Thrower. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Kenneth, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

This question to me at this current time feels very relevant to me at the moment as I am going through a rather difficult time. I think knowing and fulfilling your purpose in life is most likely the most important aspect to finding happiness and contentment in life and it isn’t always easy to figure out or know what your purpose is.

I never expected to be a business owner. It was something that my friend and I started together due to a lot of things lining up due to the Covid lock down back in 2020. Learning to make mead and enjoying creating new flavors was something I really enjoyed. However, that isn’t where I found my purpose.

Opening the business, serving our customers, running our events and providing a safe space for people has been where I have found most of my purpose. Establishing, taking care of and serving the community has been where I have felt the most contentment and happiness in my life. Then seeing how the relationships I have made have built and then how those relationships fill my life in return. That is where I found my purpose.

It became more about building a community and building relationships with people.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Kenneth Thrower and I make mead. Mead is my primary choice for when I drink and I love sharing it with others. I enjoy the fact that it is more niche and that people always have questions about what it is.

Moon Dog Meadery is the business I started with my best friend Derrick Forrest. We are a meadery, bottle shop and event space that is also dog friendly. All of our products are themed around dogs and have amazing art done by my good friend Tim Boardman.

What is special about Moon Dog to me is that it is something that I have built with my best friend. Alongside that the relationships that have gained through Moon Dog. The community that we have build through all of our events. From board games, video games, karaoke, live music, trivia, dance nights and more. Plus it is just really fun to create new mead flavors based on things I love such as my butterscotch mead, Japanese plum mead and mango lassi mead as a few of my personal favorites.

My most recent passion projects at the shop have been to work towards several new product line launches such as our new THC honey beverage and for the future and carbonated session meads.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Serving customers and giving them a great experience is probably the best skill with regards to building a customer base. We do not do too much marketing and having people that love what we do and share that with others based on the experience they have is by far the best marker for knowing we are doing something right.

2. Being able to research and find the correct answers is another huge thing as there is just so much that goes into running a business that there is always something you don’t know or will need to figure out.

3. For us taking the time to perfect our mead recipe to build upon was something we did over a long period of time as home brewers before moving to a larger scale. So making sure you know how to scale up and having confidence in your product is a huge starting point

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

One of the things we focus on is the local community here in Durham, NC

We primarily try to work with North Carolina local people, groups and companies regarding everything that we can. Our events are run by locals, all of our bottle shop stock is primarily NC brewed, our honey for our mead is locally sourced.

We love to work with anyone that has a fun or exciting idea and we always try to entertain the ideas and make them work based on things that have already been booked.

So if you are looking to run or host an event with us feel free to reach out to us at our email
