We recently connected with Kenny Keys and have shared our conversation below.
Kenny, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I’d like to start this off by saying I’m grateful that your interested in my story. My name is Kenny Keys born and raised in North Minneapolis. I came into this world with the refuse to lose mentality. When I was born I had complications and the doctors kept me in the hospital for a couple weeks. I literally came
into this world facing issues and if you ask me that’s where the fighter in me was born. I have always been very competitive and confident, I believe I can do anything I put my mind too. As a child my mother got ill when I was seven years old and she was a single mother, watching her fight through her battles
gave me a lot of confidence because I felt like even at seven years old if she could deal with what she was dealing with and keep going everyday then I
could also do anything I put my mind too. My self esteem grew a lot from playing basketball. When I was 12 years old I went to a Timberwolves basketball summer camp, I played so well they moved me up from the 12 year old kids to the 15 and 16 year old kids. I even got picked out of all the kids to
play one on one against Sam Jacobson who was the star player for the Minnesota Gophers at that time. It was definitely a stand out moment in my life. That summer I was also in a commercial that aired on TV so being noticed by people or people saying “Aren’t you that kid in the commercial” definitely gave me a major boost in my confidence. These things played a major role in boosting my self esteem and my confidence as a child. That mixed with me being very competitive created this side of me that to this day I believe giving the right opportunities I can do anything I put my mind too.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own Keys To The Castle. My company has remodeled many homes in St Paul and Minneapolis. I have been contracted by property management companies to help them pass MPHA and City Inspections. I’m looking into also finding more property management companies that are interested in getting their Maintenance staff trained in passing Section 8, React Inspections, and City Inspections. I have over 12 years experience in this field and I am a specialist in passing Inspections. I’m also known as Coach Da Keys. I am a rapper/songwriter that loves making music to my core. It’s something about hearing a dope instrumental and creating a vibe to a beat that brought Coach Da Keys to life. My music can be found on YouTube, Spotify, and Instagram. I also started a clothing line called KennyWayneCollection. The link will be added to this Article so please support.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The biggest impact throughout my life were my grandfather and my great grandfather. One was a known Artist and musician and the other was a
business owner. They both inspired me to go after what I want in life with no fears of failure. Also watching my mother and father battle through illnesses and still have the courage to want to live gave me the mentality to fight my way through any and all obstacles in my way. The most important quality of all though is my refuse to lose attitude. When you come from the life I come from statistically I wasn’t suppose to make it. Me knowing the odds made me
fight even harder to make people see me in a different light. My advice to others is always believe in yourself. In the beginning every talented person throughout history from Muhammad Ali to LeBron James was their own biggest fan until they made everybody else believe in them too. It starts with believing in yourself. Everybody has a purpose in this world, when you figure yours out give it all you got.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am most definitely looking for people to collaborate with. Anybody that knows me can vouch I’m constantly talking about building for the betterment of people’s circumstances and opportunities for people’s future. I’m looking for Property Owners and Property Managers to do contacts with their properties to help pass section 8 and MPHA inspections, I’m always looking for producers and Artists to build with musically, and I’m also looking for investors. I have some great ideas that I believe with some backing can grow into beautiful opportunities for the community.
