We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kennyetta Watkins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kennyetta below.
Kennyetta, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
In my life, I have always felt different one way or another, whether it is because of the color of my skin, being introverted or just going against the crowd because I feel I can find my way on the path that I choose verses the crowd or by what is comfortable. I have learned being different and doing things differently in a room that lacks diversity, is being comfortable with being uncomfortable. I have learned how to relinquish control of what is actually not in my control as well as loving myself unconditionally without the need of being seen by others. One thing for sure, even if others despise me just by the look of me, they can never deny my presence because my personality, my capabilities, my kindness, my joy and my spirit leaves a lasting impression. I like to say a very positive one. I learned how to stay true to myself and focus on what is in front of me and my calling and purpose of why I am placed physically and spiritually in the room that I differ from everyone else.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the counselor and founder of Relentless Counseling, LLC. Therapy is one of the most sacred and life changing journey’s any person can partake, whether it is a healing journey or self-exploration. I foster a practice that uplifts and cultivate the experience of being true to oneself and loving one self unconditionally. It is a special journey within Relentless Counseling because it is not just work but a way of life. Over the past few years it has been not a business but a lifestyle all of its own and safe space that cultivates wholeness, love, forgiveness and peace. It is a holistic approach that aligns the mind, body and spirit. I am excited about the Relentless Counseling brand because we have grown and developed a podcast to continue our mission and is heard around the globe. I am in the process of writing my first book and expanding into the business of subscriptions to have tangible items monthly that can help people continue their self-exploration to their best life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I don’t know if it can just be summed up in three qualities, but one major one that was the most impactful in my journey was integrity. Know what matters most to you in every area of your life. What do you stand for? it is your code you follow when people are looking and when they are not. My second quality that is most impactful is having the right people around you, not just people who are supportive but people that challenge you and hold you accountable. My third quality would be consistency which also ties into a fourth which is self-discipline. I don’t believe you can truly excel in life with out consistency and self-discipline. Everything that feel good is not good and everything that is hard and tough is not bad.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
As I continue to grow and be successful in my own right from my career, spiritual, personal, financial, relationships, etc I am also faced with the challenge of not getting in my own way and staying in my comfort zone. Imposter syndrome shows its ugly head in my life from time to time and self-doubt creeps in and it can be debilitating. As I am transitioning to a new chronological milestone and going higher in my endeavors I am overcoming this challenge by continuing to face adversity head on and being okay with not being okay and accepting that things are not going to be comfortable and easy, it doesn’t mean I have to avoid it. I challenge myself daily by doing things that shock me. one example as I do this interview, I have registered and started training for a half-marathon. This is completely out of my comfort zone and it is very challenging for me but is teaching me lessons in other areas of my life. My dreams are big and scary as it should be, nothing can hold me back from reaching my dreams but me so I will not be in my own way, I am going to conquer my fears by facing them and getting uncomfortably comfortable in doing something different and thinking differently.
